Star Wars 9 will bomb even harder

its a dead franchise now.

reply

its difficult to say if 9 will underperform and end up with a humiliating 600-700m or end up doing similar to TLJ 1.3b (or even more if everyone kind of digs it like TFA)

On the plus side - its the conclusion of the trilogy, JJ is back (no doubt to steer it back to being a crowd pleaser after TLJ), it'll be a year and a half wait (so unlike Solo will build anticipation) and its back to Decemeber

and on the negative - will the TLJ online backlash and Solos disastrous box office have any bearing?

=???

It's going to be very interesting. I've no doubt that Solo was hit hard by TLJ despite them not being directly linked so you'd think audiences will be even less likely to want to see IX. Then you have to consider that TLJ has given IX nowhere to go and JJA's track record with endings....

Then you've got a lot people sensing a change in the wind with many of KK's supporters beginning to distance themselves and actually calling for her to go, none of which looks good for IX.

This said the first two made over a billion each and seem to be very popular with the blogging classes so anything could happen! I think the only certainty is that the meta bollocks surrounding Star Wars will continue to be far more interesting than anything that happens on screen.

JJ has no track record with endings, he has abandoned all projects midway thru

reply

Exactly. It is my sincere hope that 'ol slipping jimmy JJ is having sleepless nights right now realising his luck has run out and he actually has to deliver. He got a pass for Star Trek. He got a pass for TFA. And now both franchises are fucked. You just know he's just desperate to leave all those beautiful mystery boxes nailed shut to entice us into another trilogy but he knows he's never going to get away with that anymore.

Hope the talentless hack doesn't sleep a wink from now until Nov 2019.

reply

you really don't want JJ to sleep a wink do you..theres nothing worse than a sleepless night and you will that upon poor JJ for a year and a half! the man will go mad and become very ill!

reply

Not a wink...

reply

If JJ sleeps not a wink until 2019 then he'll either have to learn to sleep standing up like a horse or he'll have to keep moving constantly or drown much like a shark. "Shark" Abrams...has a certain ring to it. Better than "Horse" Abrams, I suppose...sounds too Native American somehow. For his next project JJ can direct and star in "A Man Called Shark".

Solo is positioned to lose between $50 and $80 million at this point.

I think Episode IX will definitely be well under $1 billion, probably in the $700-800 million range but probably won't lose money. Fan reviews of Solo are much better than TLJ and a number of people who wrote off going to see it in the theaters (like me) will end up seeing it on cable before IX comes out. If they enjoy it, some of those folks may end up getting suckered back into the theater for IX.

reply

I want it to bomb so hard that Jar Jar never gets hired in Hollywood ever again and KK fired and humiliated in a press conference called by Disney Execs, Ruin Johnson's trilogy and his career officially cancelled with extreme prejudice.
Now, that would subvert my expectations in the greatest way possible!!!

reply

losing 50-80million is nothing when you destroy the SW brand, which is very hard to do but somehow they managed to do so.

reply

Agreed. In 6 months, they've left about $1 billion of revenue on the table.

reply

We can only hope. This shit needs to change.

Unlikely , if will still do fine domestic, but may miss 1 billion

reply

The only reason for me to watch IX would be to see how bad it is. I'm sure there are quite a few others who'll go to the theatre just to see how much of a trainwreck Star Wars has become.
