Why did Tom Hanks portray Col. Parker with that accent?

What the fuck!? I'm a new fan to Elvis and was blown away by Austin Butler's portrayal of him! I really didn't know anything about the "Colonial", but I had heard about him. After seeing the movie, I was curious about the real man, so I looked him up. Here's what I found...

Watch that and tell me why the fuck Tom Hanks did that accent in the movie!? I fucking hate Hollywood for this type of shit!

I can hear the conversations during shooting:

“Should we tell him??”
“I’m not telling him - *you* tell him!”
“Dude’s been winning Oscars since before we were born. I ain’t saying shit!”
“Well…let’s just trust his choice then”

I’ve always found Hanks to be wildly overrated. When I was young my cousin and I used to watch The Polar Express and laugh and laugh because all the multiple voices Tom Hanks performed simply sounded like Tom Hanks trying to do other voices. It was very distracting as well.

You should see The Ladykillers…ugh. He pulled the same accent-shit in that one too. He has no depth - he’s just “Tom Hanks”.

YOU ARE YOUNG...YOU CAN BE FORGIVEN FOR JUDGING AN ACTOR BY THE WORK HE DID AFTER HE TURNED 50.

reply

Oh I'm not young at all...I used to watch Bosom Buddies with my parents every week 😂

reply

OH...THEN I THINK YOU ARE A CRAZY PERSON...HANKS WAS FUCKING AWESOME IN HIS DAY...HE STILL PULLS OUT THE AWESOME PRETTY REGULAR...NEWS OF THE WORLD WAS EXCELLENT.

reply

I am a crazy person - I won't argue with that. I think he's a tremendous actor - I just feel he's overrated at times. When he's just being a normal dude without trying to be a character he's very very good.

BUT - there are plenty of "awesome back in their day" actors who are still very good as well. Tom just needs to stick with what he's good at - being an every-man.

Kowalski, I'm going to disagree with you re Hanks. Yes, Hanks has given some amazing performances in his day and showed huge range, but over the last 10-20 years he's disappointed me more often than not... and he disappointed me in "Elvis".

I suspect he's let his ego run away with him and has stopped listening to his directors, and he'd benefit from hiring someone to slap him upside the head whenever he goes over the top.

IF HE HAD ONLY EVER MADE NEWS OF THE WORLD...I WOULD THINK HIM TO BE AMAZING...THAT WAS AN AWESOME FLICK. NOEMOJI

It's incredibly kind of you to only remember the good performances, considering...

I AM HONESTLY NOT SURE WHAT "BAD" PERFORMANCES WE ARE DANCING AROUND. NOEMOJI

This one, for a start!

And "The Ladykillers" which IMHO was his first absolutely dreadful outing, and he was disappointing in "The Davinci Code" and its sequels, and he played about 10 different roles in "Cloud Atlas" and was a dreadful ham in all of them. I'm sure there are more, but I've been seeing fewer of his films over the last decade or two.

reply

He lost a bet.

reply

Because he's Tom Hanks and no one told him no.

reply

He was a Dutch

reply

Ya but if you hear an interview with the real guy - no accent.
It's like Hanks thought 'I have a great Dutch accent, and I'm gonna force it in here dammit!'

I'm Dutch, and it was a shitty accent TBH.

reply

I don't know why but it made the character seem very sinister with evil intentions, who at times didn't look out for Elvis' best interest..and manipulated Elvis into his death...it works.

reply

It was very uncomfortable to watch.

reply

The accent police have arrived smh🙄

reply

It wasn't just the accent that was the problem. Hanks was terrible in the role and the worst part of the movie.
