Mariko's casting is terrible.

The actress may be fluent in Japanese, but she doesn't look the part. She looks like your typical western stereotype of a "hot Asian woman".

reply

As a westerner I'm ok with her casting.

reply

I agree. Her parents are Japanese, apparently, but I cannot help and think "no way, she looks Polynesian or something, not Japanese."

Her looks aside, her English is too good, too modern and flawless for a Japanese noble woman who had some training in the past in the 17th Century.

She does really feel like a bad casting choice, so far.
To be fair, it is extremely difficult to fill the shoes of Yoko Shimada, who was flawless and perfect I think.
Then again, others do indeed do their characters justice. Sanada is brilliant so far, as expected and the gentleman portraying Yabushige kinda steals the show in his own right already. Both these characters had brilliant actors portraying them fantastically in the 80's version already.

reply

I hate to break it to you, but both her parents are Japanese. She is ethnically Japanese. Not everyone conforms to the "typical" appearance for their ethnic group, if there even is such a thing.

reply

are you that stupid to understand what he say? he does not mention her being japanese or not. he say shes bad

reply

My reading comprehension is just fine dumbass. It's you're that seems to need work. I was responding to the OP, and he said (and I quote -- with emphasis added):

The actress may be fluent in Japanese, but she doesn't look the part. She looks like your typical western stereotype of a "hot Asian woman".

I see not one word of criticism for her acting, or any aspect of her performance in that verbatim quote, he specifically says she does not look the part. It's completely about appearance. Another poster chimed in saying "no way, she looks Polynesian or something, not Japanese."

But she's not "Polynesian or something." She's ethnically Japanese, and I'm sorry, but it's both hilarious, and idiotic (not to mention incredibly arrogant) for non-Japanese people to criticize an ethnically Japanese actress for not looking Japanese enough. Do you people even hear yourselves?

reply

ho so your one moronic leftist who claim everything is "cultoral appropiration" now? lol what an absolute idiot you are

reply

man you guys are so fucking dumb! hahaha

reply

Hah! Lifelong conservative republican here. Try again.

You're an idiot: you criticized me, and your criticism was wrong -- not wrong in lacking merit, but wrong in that you showed no understanding whatever of what I actually wrote or what I was responding to. You were the one who was too stupid to understand the OP, and you popped off with a factually incorrect retort.

You got it wrong. You misunderstood. And worse, you were smug about it. And now, rather than admit what a pompous ass you were, you're just throwing out insults like a petulant child.

BTW, you can't spell either. It's cultural appropriation, not coltoral appropriation -- which isn't what I was pointing out either. I merely think it's pretty damn arrogant to decide what looks "correct" about someone else's ethnicity and appearance. Who anointed you assholes the arbiters of ethnic authenticity?

reply

makes no difference that shes japanese. the op clearly said you blind fool "She looks like your typical western stereotype of a "hot Asian woman"

never was the op saying that she isnt look asian or japanese. he said she looked like a steretoype of an asian woman

and yet you absolute idiot started go all rage blazing claiming that shes japanese even tho the op never said she wasent one. he only said she looked like stereotype.

furthermore. she speaks english too well what makes her character unrealistic

reply

I don't care if the OP thinks she looks like a "typical western stereotype of a 'hot Asian woman'." That's his opinion. Nothing more. I also don't agree with it. It sounds as if he'd be making the same criticism for any actress they hired who happened to be very beautiful. Well, if you read the novel, Mariko is supposed to be beautiful.

As for her speaking "English" too well... First off, that's an artistic concession to the show's biggest audience, which is English-speaking; the language they're actually supposed to be communicating in is Portuguese, so her speech, accent, whatever, is somewhat irrelevant.

But... if you want to follow the convention to the Nth degree, and assume that this is supposed to represent how good her command of Portuguese is, well, sorry, there's nothing unrealistic about it. She says in the show that she's been speaking and learning the language for fourteen years, and she's old enough to have a son about that same age, but doesn't look older than maybe her early thirties so, roughly half her life. Moreover, some people are gifted at languages. There's nothing remotely unrealistic about it.

reply

> he said she looked like a steretoype of an asian woman

What does that even mean? She has almond eyes, black hair and a petite build?

Why do you have to amp up into an insulting rage?

reply

I thought the same thing, but she is 100% Japanese. They probably needed someone who could fluently speak both languages. I saw her recently in Gods and Monsters as well. She's actually not the greatest actress, but I think she's doing fine in this role.

reply

The only Asians you know are from movies, right?

reply

She is full-blooded Japanese, but you are correct. Blackthorne's legitimate "consort" has a much more authentic period look, with the plucked eyebrows, minimal make-up.

The actress who plays Mariko must be too busy in contemporary projects to keep her modern look, but they could certainly tone down the modern make-up at least, but hey, the producers and her and her agent(s) must have agreed she'd be the "hottest" one and they succeeded, authenticity be damned.

reply

Well, I don't care if she's the "hottest" because my preference are 'hot' males. ☺

She's a very good actress, cute and fits Mariko's role perfectly. ♥

reply

So, you would ignore your paying audience in any movie you might be involved in the making of? She is probably going to win all kinds of awards for that role.

reply

I do not think she is terrible. I still like more the Mariko of the series of 1980, but that is all.
