For a final statement film, it did seem a pretty underwhelming topic.

Agreed

Ikr, when it was announced I was tryin to figure out if it were an apt send off for him (as in its to do with the film industry) or really boring subject (film reviews), my initial reaction was the latter, just sounded pretty dull ,even he loaded up with an all stars Tarantino cast (Brad, Leo, SLJ, Travolta, Kurt, Uma, Waltz, Margot etc plus tom cruise). and unless it was going to be like a cool True Romance style action film (which it probably wasnt) mightve struggled to interest audiences..

guess QT came to feel that way too (maybe he should saved OUATIH as his final film)

reply

A love letter to cinema doesn't seem like a bad final film.

reply

Dumb self-imposed movie limit is dumb.

reply

no, it isn't. it makes perfect sense if you read what's his reasoning.

reply

Correct me if I'm wrong but I once heard him saying that many directors devolve and basically turn to shit over the years.

His reasoning seems to be that he doesn't want to make any bad movies and that he basically wants to protect his legacy/reputation?

If so I think that's a bit pathetic to be honest. Every movie has it's fans, Tarantino of all people should know that, he regularly champions low budget and obscure cult classics. I'd much rather Tarantino continued churning movies out instead of arbitrarily retiring after 11 movies (He can call it 10 all he likes, Kill Bill was released in two parts. You don't see anyone else treating movie franchises/sequels shot back-to-back as one sole movie).

reply

I completely agree. If his true love is film, why stop making them?

reply

That's what I don't get. Tarantino loves so many rough around the edges cult releases, you'd think he'd recognize that almost every movie has it's merits and fans, that if he were to release a movie that the critics and general public didn't care for that there would still be some people out there who love it.

For me that's the beauty of movies. Everyone has different tastes. Some of my all time favorite movies are considered complete dogshit by many.

Also he's not wrong that many directors lose their mojo so to speak but just the other day Francis Ford Coppola was trending on here because he's struggling to get a big marketing budget for his new movie. I was even in that thread mentioning that he hasn't made a movie that did well since 1992. Still his legacy is secured. When people think of FFC they think The Godfather & Apocalypse Now. Nothing will ever take that away from him. Tarantino is in the same boat now, whatever he does going forward he'll still have those early beloved movies to his name.

“Some of my all time favorite movies are considered complete dogshit by many”

Omg - so true for me also. One of the great things about the internet is being able to find others who enjoy those same dogshit films. But yeah, QT is aware more than most how many people adore even a directors worst films. Heck, my all time favorite Tarantino flick is Death Proof (2007).

I would like nothing more than for him to continue making films till the end. I even wish he would shrug off the A listers and go back to his core group of actors from his beginnings. Either way, it’s going to be very interesting to see what his next project is about, his last or not.

reply

after a few years of writing novels only extreme film buffs read and he gets forgotten about abit in the new AI world and he sees Marty and Speilberg and RScott still directing their movies still making millions and being critically lauded he'll comeback with 'The 11th Tarantino Movie!'

reply

Also, even if he wanted such a limit, he should have refrained from announcing it until the tenth one was in the can. Now expectations can't help but be sky high.

100%

👍
This article is suggesting that he should ditch the plan altogether:

Interesting article Jes' Sayin'.

How does he get out of making his next film his final film?

He could just say "I've reconsidered. The tenth film may not be the last one."

Or something like that, right?

reply

Makes sense to meeeee!

reply

Announcing it beforehand gives him more attention and more money, which I don't think he's opposed to.

Regardless, it is absolutely a stupid concept. You should quit when you know you're in serious decline, not by some arbitrary limit. I can only imagine if Scorsese for instance stopped in such a manner, and the great films that would have been lost.

I think Tarantino's best work is well behind him, but there's still the possibility of a future masterpiece.

Now we are getting info about what the movie was about. Seems it was to be a kind of retrospective:

In a lengthy article detailing the collapse of The Movie Critic, THR mentioned that while no specific story details ever emerged, Tarantino did play around with “a couple intriguing ideas.” First, The Movie Critic, which had set Brad Pitt as its leading man, could have functioned as “a Tarantino goodbye meta-verse” by having the filmmaker’s earlier movies “existing in the same era.” This would have allowed Tarantino to bring back various actors he’s worked with to either reprise their characters for “movie within a movie” moments or play fictional versions of themselves as the actors playing these characters we know so well.

The other idea Quentin Tarantino was reportedly batting around for The Movie Critic was including a theater where some of the characters would have interacted with “a budding future auteur.” In fact, it could have been none other than a teenaged Tarantino, as he worked at a Torrence porn theater during his youth. That plot point is reminiscent of The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg’s 2022 movie that was a semi-autobiographical account of his adolescence and becoming a filmmaker, albeit with different character names.
