Finn shouldve died between 7 and 8

Just had him not survive his light sabre injuries:

-His character wasn't needed in 8 & 9/no need for Casino World

-Could've gone out heroically at end of VII

-No being sidelined moaning from Boyega (aside him moaning about being killed off I guess)

End scene of Rey meeting Poe:
Rey: where's Finn?
Poe: he didn't make it
Rey: aw.. (looks sad then moves to Leia).. General.. I got these books from Luke.. he's dead as well right?

reply

I guess being sliced through your spine with a lightsaber should have caused slightly more permanent injuries.

They should have gone with that, then Finn could have been a wheelchaired hero in the TLJ. That would have been nice piece of inclusiveness for a sorely underrepresented group within the SW universe. He could have been wheeled around by Poe, purposefully written as his gay partner rather than just being alluded to.

reply

Black, gay and disabled? wow.. Rotton Tomatos would've been at least 110%

reply

Lol, only if he was also newly identifying as a woman.

reply

Boyega sucks as a person, and Finn as a character (was kinda funny in the first one), but off screen deaths never work unless the person has really died. If the character was written off, it just shows in the movie.

reply

Rian could've done it as part of his meta/post modern subversion of expectations thing he had going on ..

We expected Finn to survive because the actor isn't dead.. but guess what ..he didn't

reply

Y'know it just hit me..they killed Luke.. but left Finn alive. who the hell would ever even DREAM of doing that?!

reply

They should have given Finn more to do. He was a great character.

reply

More to do: yes.

They should have kept Finn and Rey as equal parts main character and built the story around them. Doesn't have to be romantic, but around the bond of those two characters.

Of course, in retrospect, Kylo Ren had the most interesting arc and they also could have built the story around the "fall" of the badguy anti-villain rather than around the rise of a hero.

But I digress.

As to Finn's character, he either should have been allowed to shine, or else they should have let him sacrifice himself at the end of this film - now that would have subverted our expectations!

They also should have let him have the fun, buddy adventure sub-plot with Poe instead of Rose.

Wasn't Poe supposed to die early in TFA .. but Isaac wanted a bigger role so it was rewritten to bring him back at the end, had he not then I guess Finn would've gotten most of the stuff Poe was doing in VIII & IX

Kylos journey from good to bad would've mirrored Anakin in the PT and I doubt they'd have wanted to go that route again (still they could've explored that in just VII had they showed the fall of the New Republic and Han Luke Leia lose everything they'd won in VI)

reply

Story I heard was that Poe was supposed to die earlier Abrams like Isaac's performance and the rapport between Finn and Poe so much that he didn't want to kill him off. Who knows what the truth is, though. It's one of many stories which shows what is evident in the "story" telling: they had no real plan with this stuff.

Kylo's journey would have felt different, I think, because Star Wars has never been set from the Empire's perspective. Yes, Anakin turned bad, but he was a good guy for most of the prequels and he was fighting for the Jedi for most of them as well. Focusing a whole trilogy on Kylo would have meant "we" the audience would be spending all our hero time with the bad guys. Could've been interesting. Plus, Kylo - our protagonist - would be actively striving against things Luke, Han, and Leia fought for. The switch in perspective would've made it feel fresh and interesting, Driver's a great actor, and Kylo was one of the better characters they invented for the ST.

Star Wars should've died between VI and VII

reply

It did! From a certain point of view...

reply

I disagree. Finn was a good character and Boyega is a good actor. Why not keep him around for the duration ?

reply

He should have had a better script .
