Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has won the best movie for grownups award, presented Monday night at AARP The Magazine’s 17th annual awards show at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

“The Last Jedi” topped “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” for the prize. Mark Hamill and Kelly Marie Tran presented the award to director Rian Johnson, who said that it was time to retire the dictum that one should not meet one’s heroes.

“You’re Luke Skywalker, man,” he told Hamill.

Tran noted the film was her first movie role and gave her the sense that anything is possible, given that she’s the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants.

WTF does that award even mean?

reply

AARP is retired people. People who remember watching the Star Trek pilot, Outer Limits or Twilight Zone.

reply

Yeah, but... Is the award given because the movie has retirement-age actors as some of the main characters? I assume that must be it, since the actors that also won awards are all older.

reply

@ to Frogarama

I was confused too so I googled it

marvellous movies and performances that appeal directly to a powerful audience -the 50-plus. We are delighted to celebrate another year of actors, directors and writers that brought the most compelling stories to life on the silver screen.

I smell a rat .. foul play...after the TLJ debacle the only way Disney can save face and KK her a$$ is by winning some awards.

This is the first step ,the first manoeuvre that will allow TLJ to win at least one of the 4 minor Oscar awards it receive a nominee for .

You mean a group of retired people AKA club of little friends giving awards, who are given the focus by the media because they give the awards to the required diverse movies.

And we don't even know how many grownups are we talking about. "Retired people" could be two retired people. I'm not kidding, a couple of years ago, The Guardian and the BBC were giving the focus to some National Muslim Federation or some pompous name like that... that, long story short, were like half dozen of people. But hey, they said things the media wanted to hear.

reply

AARP is huge. Wotta moron!

reply

Ofc they have to bring politics into it. Because you could't just accept an award without talking about immigration-policy.

Who gives a shit?

'A movie for grownups' sounds strangely childish... don't you think?

reply

Yes it does.

reply

Hah! Yeah, it does.

reply

Is this a joke?

I guess their definition of "grownups" are "older stupid people".

"What's your plan, general?"

"I'm not telling."

reply

It should've won "Shittiest Movie of the Year", and Hamill should've walked out and slapped the shit out of Ruin Johnson for destroying his character. And then he should've squeezed Ruin's boobs and glared at him.

reply

Hollywood liberal elites pat themselves on the back, kind of disgusting.

reply

The AARP are Hollywood liberal elites?

What world do you live in?

reply

I thought this was a joke. Guess not.
