Give Finn A Purpose

Maybe Lead An Uprising Within The Stormtroopers in EP IX

Ditch the love interest

Yup. In The Force Awakens, he was just a guy who wanted to run away. To take him from that to a guy willing to lay his life on the line for his friends is a great character arc and it was wrecked.

reply

I was so annoyed that Rose saved him....he has added nothing of value to the films. His death could have served a purpose. Instead we have the unneeded character saving the worthless character.

reply

Saved him by almost killing both of them and then lecturing him afterward. Rose is the most annoying and useless character since Jar Jar and, between the two, I prefer the Gungan.

reply

Did she save him though? Arent they both stranded in front of an entire army. How will they escape? Run really fast?

reply

He dragged her back to the base and they were both ok at the end.

reply

He dragged her back to base in front of all those giant camel robots? Who were able to focus fire on a small target, which was seen some minutes later when they fire at Luke.
Ah maybe they felt bad for him or just forgot, pff total bs movie, was fun in theater, lots of explosions and pew pew, but if you think about this movie for 2 minutes..

reply

Lol yep it was pretty far-fetched, but typical for this movie.

A step by step breakdown of the logic in this movie's entire plot shows that there really is no logic at any point. Johnson had the same problem with Looper, which is a completely self-contradictory plot in nearly every way. He even got his own time travel rules backward and made a time loop that could never have started in the first place.

Notice how Finn decided to fly into the laser without even trying to fire a single shot down the barrell. Makes you wonder if those junky speeders even had weapons. None of the speeders fired a shot, in fact there didn't seem to be any plan with going up against the walkers.

At least on Hoth, the speeders could gain height and come down on the walkers to look for weak spots and try to take out the cockpit. These Crait speeders were stuck on the ground shooting at legs and feet, which they never even tried.

And yes, Kylo declares to leave no survivors, yet apparently the walkers just stood there doing nothing, watching Finn drag Rose back to the base.

reply

lol that was exactly what I was screaming at the theater: FIRE AT THE DEATH STAR CANNON GATE RAM MACHINE!! ah well. It wouldve made sense if he flew into it caused a massive explosion destroying most of the small army. But another fighter had to fly into him mid-air inside a giant charging laser beam in front of an army to save him.
Still gonna watch the next star wars movies but I might just download them. Hopefully jj can fix some of the story and hopefully snoke is still alive because that was kinda the biggest let down for me, who the fuck was Snoke? I kinda liked force awakens, wasnt the best star wars but made some sense atleast.

reply

Wouldn't it make a lot of sense if Rose flew into the ship-cannon? Following in her heroic sister's footsteps? That was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. I was fully expecting Rose to jump in front and continue into the cannon.

"Maybe Lead An Uprising Within The Stormtroopers in EP IX"

Thats actually a really good idea.

reply

That's impossible. Stormtroopers are mostly white males, which means they're genetically evil nazis psychopaths that only live to oppress poor innocent victims. They can't be good: that would break the new Star Wars universe. ^_^

reply

Actually they were cloned after Jango Fett who is not white.

reply

The clone wars happened in the prequels and it was originally the army of the Republic. After that, soldiers are not cloned anymore.

reply

In the Disney SW the stormtroopers are a mix of every race in the galaxy.

The problem with Finn is that Finn, Poe and Rei were a diversity copy of Luke, Han and Leia. Finn would be the new Luke, as Poe would be a copy of Han.

But then Rei started to absorb story arcs in order to become fully a Mary Sue ^^. She took most of the story arcs from Luke: becoming a Jedi knight? Rei. Being an amazing pilot? Rei. Finding the truth about mom and dad? Rei.

So Finn became a character without a story.

Mary Sueing hurts storytelling. It doesn't only makes Rei far less interesting, since she's always good at everything, no struggle involved It makes characters around less interesting too, because since she does everything, the characters around do nothing.

reply

it's too late at this point tho "fix" the problems with Finn including the many other problems beginning with TFA including MaRey Sue. Finn was an inconsequential, loser, Jar Jar buffoon sidekick to everyone he met in the first film & nothing has changed two thirds through this crap trilogy

reply

No thank you, the character sucks and the actor is a hack I don't ever want to see again.

reply

From what i've seen John Boyega is a perfectly okay actor but while initially having a lot of potential Finn is ultimately a crappy character (So is Rey) due to bad writing. Not much better than the likes of Jar Jar Binks but even Jar Jar ultimately had more usefullness than what Finn's been given.

reply

I just wish they would stop having Finn be electrocuted in every movie he is in for dumb comic relief. Give the character some dignity, please.
