What's the the best way to watch the Star Wars Saga?

Machete Order: [ANH ESB TPM AOTC ROTS ROTJ] Gives a more mysterious and satisfying feeling as we start off with Luke's Story and the prequels are a flash black answering the questions posed by Empire concerning Vader/Anakin. Jedi comes after the calamity in Sith bringing closure.

Chronological Order: [1, 2, 3, Rogue One, 4, 5, 6] If you're going to do it this way watch Rogue One, because the there is a huge drop off in the pacing and special effects between Sith and Hope, so the Rogue One can better ease you in to the transition. Also the importance of the Death Star is greatly magnified this way.

Release Order: [OT, PT, ST] This way you get to see how disjointed it was for the fans starting in the middle.

Fucking Loser Order: [Hope, Empire, Jedi, Awakens, (Last) Jedi, Ep 9] If you're a loser like Confused Matthew and you hate Lucas and the prequels but love the Disney sequels, now you can rejoice as you watch the original trilogy and then watch Po, Fin, and Rey basically redo everything in the sequel trilogy.

Only three I like order: ANH, ESB, ROTJ.

I love the original Star Wars films and I think they're basically evergreen.

I was entertained by The Force Awakens, but there's nothing really interesting or original going on. I like the concepts of The Last Jedi and some scenes, but was overall disappointed.

I enjoy a handful of scenes from the prequel trilogy, and John Williams' score, but overall I find them confused and badly written.

I found Rogue One to be remarkably boring and dull. Donnie Yen's character and Alan Tudyk's droid might have been interesting in a good movie. Rogue One is probably my least favourite of all of them.

Also thought RO is the lowpoint. But then KKs puppy directed TLJ :) .

And the OT has to be watched at the theatrical version indeed. You got the Laserdisc or the poorly LaserDisc ripped DVD version?

reply

I have the DVDs where disk one is whatever edit Lucas had declared to be the "definitive" version that week and the bonus disks are the original, unaltered theatrical versions. I have never once even put any of the disk ones into a DVD player.

reply

Yep, thos "disk two"s are amazing (also bought them, cause my Laserdisc player wont work for all eternities :) ). But for some strange reason the quality of the Laserdisc version still is a little better (thats why I presume that thos DVDs are just rips of the Laserdisc version).

Watched the Laserdiscs a few months ago again. Amazing what Lucas, Ford, Hamill and Fisher did back then. One of the best fantasy fairy tales ever. And im not even that kind of a Star Wars fan, cause I clearly preferred Star Trek back then ;) (which also was almost destroyed by JJ Lighning and then completley destroyed by greedy Paramounts "Discovery" :( ).

reply

Harmy’s despecilized is the way to got for OG OT....

reply

Its nice and I also got it. But when you already got the real theatrical version .... why using it?

reply

Because it’s HD and animorphic.

reply

All the missing parts are jsut upscaled. Thats what my AV receiver does all the time by itself ;) . And the second problem with the despecialized one is that it isnt stored on an optical medium. Means in 15 years its as worthless as every other 15 year old movie file.

reply

All the missing parts aren’t just upscaled. Some are the HD versions with the Special Edition changes CGId out.

In any case, I have those LD copies as well and the difference is night and day.

reply

Thos changes are huge (like the enhanced population at mos eisley). Removing them means a lot of copy and pasting with informatins you dont got ;) . But thos editions are indeed amazing anyway!

Only three I like order: ANH, ESB, ROTJ.

And I'd add: Despecialized Edition or Original Theatrical Cut.

reply

Ah, yes. Definitely should be watching one of those.

reply

Indeed chronological order. And cause Disney Star Wars became toxic with TLJ SW ends at ROTJ. As it always was meant. And BTW Rogue One is Disney Star Wars too. It doesnt contain any Jedis, it doesnt contain Star Wars music, no real opening, no likeable characters and is written in a way too depressing structure to be a real SW movie. This movie is just here to milk the Disney Star Wars cow. So its indeed Ep 1 to Ep 6 and thats it. And about the OT: You really have to get the theatrical releases (you still could buy the Laserdisc version or the ripped (from LaserDisc) DVD release done officially). Everything else was just Lucas trying to milk the LucasArts Star Wars cow ;) . And also try to get the TPM LaserDisc, cause thats the one and only theatrical version of TPM avail out there.

High as a kite?

reply

Chronological is my preference.

reply

With Rogue?

reply

Yes. Rogue One makes a better transition into the OT....

reply

A movie with no connection to Star Wars at all (no Star Wars music, no Star Wars opening, no Jedis, depressing story, no likeable characters - nobody cares when all of them die, cause we never had an emotional bonding to them) would be a waste of time. Rogue One is described at the opening credits of Ep 4 within one line. Yes, thats the complete story of the movie.

reply

Hey, you are talking about the best of the 3 recently released SW films..it makes it sound like none of them have been any good..

I do think they made a mistake with the music and opening. Also I felt it was a huge miss by not having Donnie Yen's character be an actual Jedi. However their are those out there that are obsessed with the exclusion of one of the key elements of Star Wars, that being the Force and Jedi/Sith characters, forgetting that is part of what makes Star Wars..Star Wars and not just any sci fi movie series.

I will say though, the film turned out much better than its origins should have allowed, that line of text you mentioned. I found enough to like to enjoy it myself. But yeah it was a story we didn't need..it was like the book Death Star. A book about a bunch of non essential information about a subj that really didn't need to be expanded upon.

ROTS - (RO) - ANH - ESB - ROTJ

reply

I would go with chronological, ending with ROTJ. R1 can be included, and probably should be if you liked the film. It does have a nice transition to ANH, but its not essential, not worth the time if you didn't like it and its story is covered in the opening crawl of ANH.

reply

First viewing should be in release order. Theatrical versions.
Second viewing could be chronological.
After that, machete, or however the mood hits.

reply

Watch the original trilogy and then move on to Star Trek next generation.

Done.
