What's the point?

James Bond has been around for nearly 60 years with 26 movies. At what point does the franchise retire?

reply

That's nothing. Agatha Christie has 166 titles going back 90 years.

reply

True, but its movies are not put out at the same rate as Bond. TV show, completely different situation in which you are right. Oh boy do I hope they dont try that again. James Bond Jr. Was a terrible idea.

reply

I thought this was gonna be a what's the point of releasing another Craig Bond film five years after the last one post. Cuz seriouslay. What's the point?

reply

That was my reaction to die another day. WTF was that?

reply

That was crap. It could have been great, at least it had a great JB and not this boring blonde monkey.

Better than the previous two Brosnan Bond films, that's what.

reply

I'll politely disagree. They're all pretty bad. I think the madonna theme was what put this one over the top for me.

reply

The over-the-top sword fight at the manor, albeit goofy, is a highlight, as is the incredible ice palace in Iceland. I liked the Madonna song.

I suppose the three post-"Goldeneye" films are about the same quality; I just feel "Die Another Day" is the most entertaining.

reply

Well it’s popular so I guess they’ll keep making them:

Talking of Agatha Christie her play ‘The Mousetrap’ has been running continuously in the West end since 1952, one year before the novel Casino Royale and 10 years before the first movie Dr No.

Personally though, whilst I love James Bond (books and movies) I sort of wonder if maybe Bond movies should go into a hiatus for a decade or longer.

Come back in the future, new actor, new producers, fresh ideas etc

reply

Is it popular? Or WAS it popular? And they're still trying desperately to keep it relevant. I think the Bond films have been coasting on nostalgia for a long time now.

reply

The Bible has been around for far longer. I wish that would retire.

reply

Practically speaking, it's when producers don't think they can make money off of it any more.

But at this point, I think he's been put into a pop culture pantheon and will always be around because James Bond has become just part of our zeitgeist and "the stories we tell".

Frankly, I've really enjoyed most of them, so I don't think it's out of gas, either.

reply

You're probably right. It may be regional as well. I assume it's much more popular in Great Britain than in the States.
