Disturbing: 18 years age difference between Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo!

He can be her father for Christ's sake! Yet, in the movie they want to sleep with each other.

reply

Ugh, thanks for the info. I hate relationships with age differences that huge. Pretty disgusting in my opinion.

reply

Why is that disturbing? There are couples like that in real life. If I could pick up a woman half my age, I totally would!

reply

In real life is more disturbing. Hollywood please stop casting young girl to match old man.

reply

If he/she is atleast 18 years old then that's their right to choose to be together if they want to. Nothing anyone outside of that relationship says matters to them. Especially on an internet message board.

Hollywood will never read your message here either and obey to your demand. So you're pretty much wasting your time. While you judge a couple they're enjoying their life together. Who wins in that situation? them.

reply

Grow up.

reply

If both are over 30, does it matter?

reply

Yes.

reply

Lol …what if they’re both over 50?

reply

50 with 68? It's fine.

reply

…but 30-48 is not?

reply

No, 30 is the age for fun, hangout with friends and party. 48 is the age for contemplate what I should do for the rest of my life?

Mentalities are not on the same page.

reply

That’s 20 and 38 ages IMO.

Regardless, it is up to the individual, not mandatory for everyone.

reply

They have a business relationship, not a romantic one.
Cathrine Keener plays Mark's love interest. And Adam Levine is Keira's.

reply

Do you even watch the movie? They have a romantic relationship.

reply

I love the film, I've watched it many times. Mark and Keira do not have a romantic relationship. They never even kiss.
Mark wants to get back with his ex wife, Catherine Keener.
They appreciate each other, they respect each other, they may even be attracted to one another but neither of them ever acts on it.
They share a love of music, have their shared moment in the sun, and move on.

reply

how do you feel about sing street, laura? that's one of my very favourite films.

i really like begin again, but to me it's a step or two below, mainly because i have this reflexive distaste for james corden. he really ruins every moment he's on the screen for me. doesn't kill the movie overall, of course...and it's loaded with some great songs. but i can't love it without reservations as i do sing street.

reply

Sing Street I've only seen once and need to rewatch.
I dont remember that much about it. I was over the moon for Once, when that came out, beautiful film.
Begin Again was a slick Hollywood production compared to Once and Sing Street. That indie feel is gone and that's ok in this instance.

Once, also had a them of a love that maybe in another time and place might have happened, but simply wasn't meant to be.

Good stuff.

reply

i just love his films, even when i can see they have some short-cuts and contrivances.

i really appreciate how they are so completely free of irony or cynicism. pure heart on his sleeve.

i haven't seen once in years, & very recently bumped it up on my watchlist. i'll try to get to it this month at some point.

reply

And I just bumped Sing Street. Cheers!

I can see how people can confuse the nature of the relationship, because a creative collaboration is an intimate thing.
Lines get blurred, and I'd like to think that Mark and Keira have both made that mistake in the past, and are wiser and more mature as artist and human beings in general now.

reply

I agree. They lean in to each other and in different circumstances who knows what might have happened. But I'm with you - no romantic relationship.

reply

👍🏽exactly. They lean into each other - with boundries.
It's all about the music.

reply

They do! When they go to the apartment, it's obvious they want to have sex.

reply

Wanting to have sex, does not a relationship make.
Wanting to have sex, doesnt mean you should. These characters aren't young, they're experienced adults. They've learned these things.

reply

That is even more disturbing!

You shoudn't sex with someone you're not in relationship!

reply

I used to laugh at "Autumn In New York" (2000) because Richard Gere was like 40 years older than Winona Ryder. Apparently his character is supposed to be 26 years older than Winona's. I never watched it. I thought she held herself out as being above that sort of tripe. I liked her, but way overrated.

reply

it's been a few years, and i honestly can't remember if it was ever suggested that they were attracted or sizing each other up for a relationship or anything like that in begin again.

regardless, i find it very odd & a bit both funny & sad to see pearl clutching like this about age gaps in movies. i'm not sure how sincere the op is - has the slight smell of trollishness to me - but this is something i seem to see around all the time these days, that any kind of age imbalance is automatically to be condemned, that it's something ugly.

feels more and more to me that there's a silly puritanical zealotry running through movie discourse & all cultural talk these days, that every relationship has to be scrutinized for power imbalances.

i think it would be really cool if we could actually keep our heads calm and appreciate things like that for the truths they tell us about human nature, what it is that people fancy in each other, all sorts of things.

rather than just pointing and saying 'eww, gross' which is more or less what i seem to hear so much these days.

reply

It's not a romantic relationship though, he's still in love with his wife and her with her ex. It's a friendship thing, they help get each other out of the rut their lives are in.

Also remember a lot of older people and younger people do fall in love, you need to get out of this mindset Hollywood set of it just been pretty young people getting together. Life ain't like that.
