$16-18m opening, Wed-Sun; UPDATE $20m 5-day

On the conservative side, Air‘s five-day total is pegged between $16M-$18M at 3,500 theaters. Men and women over 25 are the target, and there’s a lot of hope by many in the industry that this inspirational underdog comedy goes far this spring; older adult-skewing films are still iffy in the post-Covid market, though positive ones have broken through (i.e. Elvis, Ticket to Paradise) to wider crowds.

Following a SXSW premiere, as well as premieres in NYC and Los Angeles, Air is currently 98% fresh off 61 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 99%.

Everyone worked for free on this film and will be rewarded if it does well, a profit split rather than up front cash in hand.

THURSDAY MIDDAY UPDATE: Amazon/Artists Equity/Skydance Sports/Mandalay’s Air is still on track for a $2.5M Thursday and $16M five-day total.

so a 5 million dollar super bowl ad was a bad idea, not a breakout hit , but will still do decent , i doubt Amazon cares

reply

According to Ben Affleck the writes, director , actors, grips, wardrobe etc all worked for free but will receive a split of the profits. For everyone involved this needs to be a financial hit for those back end payments. That 5 mill super bowl add further reduces the profits. Budget was $70 mill and there is still a way to go. The financiers will get paid first then the crew.

The showing I went to was sold out, first time I’ve been to a full theater since Endgame

Do talky dramas make money today?

SATURDAY PM: However, Amazon’s first global day-and-date release Air is definitely hitting $20M, a great start for a non-tentpole dramedy aimed at adults. That provides a lot of hope for other distributors with similar fare. It’s an amount that would make late MGM/Amazon Distribution Chief Erik Lomis beam as he championed Air to pivot from a Prime Video debut to the big screen after the pic tested excellent with audiences.

It’s a massive hit! Financially it’s a tent pole!

Movies like this is what brings people back into multiplexes. This movie brings asses in seats and a solid revenue for the studios. Movies like this saves the industry. AIR & Top Gun are making films relevant based on profits alone.

reply

They reached $21 mill now so yes its a great film but Top Gun it aint.

$31 million and climbing. Although Amazon Studios is yet to release an official figure, Air is estimated to have a budget of between $70 million and $90 million.

I think $50 million is achievable during its theatrical release.

reply

It just landed at $55M

reply

It just skyrocket past $55M and next milestone is $60M. This equal a cool $30M back to Amazon and with streaming this break even in the future.

I think Air is one of those films that does considerably well but through rentals, purchases and word of mouth and I have no doubt it will be in contention for, at the very least, a few awards come Oscar season, which will only serve to add to its revenue pull. This film like the MJ series, The Last Dance, will become a timeless, money making machine far after its box office run. Just my opinion of course.

92% and 98% on RT
7.7 IMDB
I believe it’s safe to say Air is officially critically acclaimed.
