Spotted HUGE mistake

at the beginning of the movie Oppenheimer giving a lecture at the university of Leiden was some part i was looking forward to if they would put it in that movie. that man was a brainy genius knowing i believe 7 languages.
he crash coursed dutch in just a few weeks so he could give that lecture in dutch.

in the movie they're confirming he tried to speak dutch, but he was actually talking GERMAN(=Deutch)!!!! Dutch (Nederlands) is the language of the neighbor countries The Netherlands and Belgium (northern part) these are 2 veeery different languages, related sure, but more like far distant cousins, not like close siblings British and American English. what an epic out of proportion mistake for a production of this magnitude that clearly did shot tons of research.

regardless,great movie!

It is bio/history film, not a documentary. It is more of a fiction based on true events.

It is not that different from Braveheart or Blonde. Not to be taken too seriously.

reply

so if in a historical movie people in the US would speak lets say Swedish instead of English you would be like: meh its not a documentary? rolf

reply

I guess that is a bigger blunder than just historical inaccuracy.

reply

well i am talking about blunders and not historical inaccuracy if you read my post right

reply

You have lots of historical movies where people speak English instead of German, Russian, French, Chinese, Greek, Latin, etc. It's not a problem unless you want it to be.

reply

he tried to speak dutch, but he was actually talking GERMAN

That is a HUGE mistake indeed.

How about the scene where everyone is waving American flags with 50 stars on them even though the scene takes place before Alaska and Hawaii were states. :)

reply

indeed a mistake as well, people have been sharp noticing it.
but its a mistake i can easier understand, production just looking for American flags, not thinking through there have been some changes since '45

but having a language entirely wrong of a nation, i mean common. you don't need high intellectual people in your crew to know that german and dutch are not the same languages, spoken in different countries :)

reply

Haha, cool.

reply

British and American English are the same language -

reply

sure, but you do have some differences right? im sure you use words like cock and rooster not always in the same way for example :)
hence i mentioned like siblings. you speak the same language but sometimes on a different frequency. and there is a huge difference in that between Dutch and German, even though they are reltaed

reply

you know what is even weirder? Hoyte van Hoytema (director of photography) is dutch, and he was the one who gave Cillian that line to practice :/

reply

From what I understand this, like nearly all movies that pretend to be true to life, are merely the creation of the writers and the director. There's a lot of liberty taken with the facts, as is true of nearly every movie.

The tragic part is that people will watch this and think they're experts on the real Oppenheimer.

reply

It did sound German to me, so I was surprised when they said later that it was Dutch - but are you sure it was German? It was just one sentence or two.

reply

I can definitely tell you, that this was 100% NO Deutsch, but it sounded like a germanic language - most likely jibberish (typical in a US movie with someone saying he can speak a language).
I watched it in German dub and English, the OV sounds only like something germanic, in the German dub it sounds like legit Dutch (no Dutch myself, so not sure if its legit). TLDR: It is not German for sure.
