Are many asian-Americans racist?

I mean I get jews going to synagogues because it's its own religion. But if you're just Christian why go to a Asian only church? And nobody even has a spouse from another race. It's weird.

reply

it felt a little odd to me as well, especially the church. i had no idea asian only churches even existed.

reply

It depends on the culture. We have Hmong churches in the Twin Cities. It's because they have a sense of community among other Hmongs. Plus, the Hmong culture is very traditional and family oriented. There are those who have similar opinions to Yeun's character. You'll find it with any group. I generally ignore it.

reply

Are black people racist if they go to a black majority church? The only thing weird is your question.

reply

White racism. The same reason there are black churches.

reply

Its weird justifying your own racism by other people being racist as well.

reply

You're projecting.

reply

Totally correct.
And yes, those Korean only churches are indeed racist.

reply

Eddie Huang comes to mind. Used to be a fan, but his true colors came out.

reply

A lot of immigrants live in insulated communities. Although you could argue that racism (both from and against immigrants) is partly responsible for that insulation, it doesn't mean the individuals are all racist. When you all live in the same community, you will probably go to church together, and you will probably end up marrying someone from that community. There are certainly racist characters in this show, but they were mostly the main characters parents, the 1st generation immigrants. Their children weren't explicitly racist, as far as I remember, but they were certainly influenced by their parents and upbringing to socialize mainly with other asian-Americans.

Asian-Americans share a lot of cultural experience, regardless of actual ethnicity

We all get treated as nerds from time to time, or taken for granted. We've all been "complimented" on how we speak English so well.

In particular, we all know what it's like when someone like Trump's Interior Secretary Zinke said "konnichiwa" to Congresswoman Hanabusa. A sizable chunk of white Americans think he was somehow just being courteous, as if the shape of our eyes somehow programs a different language into our brains.
