if someone was new to Dune, what would the interest be?

if I had a friend with zero knowledge about Dune, see's the trailer as "desert war and some space ships", what would be the attractant to the story, other than cool visuals seen?

"A couple warring families... so?"

reply

Good question. Vilanuve probably wants people to see that Zendaya, Momoa, Brolin, and Isaacs are in it and think "Mary Jane, Aquaman, Thanos, and Poe in a sci fi movie! Yay!"

reply

hahahaha that's fair I guess. so I should tell them, "its got a bunch of famous people in it, and cool effectgs?"
What could I say about the plot that is interesting?

reply

Modern day star wars, just as silly and makes as little sense but its a space fantasy so what do you expect.

reply

sooooo... Star Wars I can say "space battles to save a resistance, beating the bad guys at the end"

and Dune "a couple of royal familes squabble control over some magic dust.... and it ends with no resolve"

hmmmmm

reply

Well you did only see half the story, its a two-parter. But yeah, star wars story is much more children-friendly.

reply

I think two main things attract people to this franchise: the complex and very well-written story of political intrigue and drama...and the combat.

reply

Based on a highly-respected novel considered a sci-fi classic in literary circles.

JJ Abrahams and Michael Bay are NOT involved.

Neither is Disney.

The cool visuals are most of the appeal, even after seeing it. It certainly didn't go into much depth with the characters, or not nearly as much as it could have.

reply

I had zero knowledge about Dune before seeing it, they had me at giant sandworms.

Seriously though I loved the movie.

reply

It's kinda like Game of Thrones in space - make that the selling point.

As for the books themselves.... while the first few books were ok, the series loses cohesion/focus later on and basically falls apart.
