I would say the most hyped movie of all time was The Phantom Menace.

OP wasn't alive in the late 90s

reply

i was alive , and it was a joke , TPM was and is the most hyped film ever , and says a lot before the internet was huge

reply

Yeah nothing compares with the hype of Episode I maybe Terminator 2

reply

That would be Batman89, T2, Jurassic Park, Phantom Menace, Spiderman02, Force Awakens, Endgame

reply

Agreed. Spider-Man: No Way Home might be up there, but I wouldn’t say it was THE most.

I’d add Avatar and Titanic to the list too.

reply

I left them 2 off as although they were very hyped and went on to the biggest BO ever initially they didnt really do the crazy box office openings as the rest .. But as time went on after release they became ever bigger phenomenas as word got around how incredible they were

I’d still say this could crack the top 10 for most anticipated films of all time.

The first trailer for this even smashed Endgame’s record for most views within 24 hours.

I think the most anticipated of the last decade have been The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Avengers: Endgame and now this because they’ve all managed to get people speculating about what is going to happen.

Where is Luke Skywalker? Who is Snoke? How will The Avengers reverse the snap? These movies planted these questions with their previous films and marketing and audiences couldn’t wait to find out. I get the sense it’s similar with Spider-Man: No Way Home, especially with the amount of speculation that the previous Spider-Men are in the movie.

maybe TDKR too

reply

Jurassic World too I would say.

reply

Yeah definitely add that to the list, that had so much hype, people thought Nolan was going to kill off Batman.

reply

maybe add the last Harry Potter for a certain generation

Even though others have kept mentioning other movies, I still vote for Phantom Menace.

It had kids skipping school, adults calling in sick, people camping outside theaters, when the trailer was released fans would purchase a ticket to any movie asking if that movie would play the new Star Wars trailer before, they would watch the trailer and leave the theater before the actual movie they paid for began... advertising, products, articles were everywhere, it was something else.

It will never be repeated due to the internet and how technology has evolved... similar to how network TV will never see the ratings they used to get decades prior before premium cable, internet-streaming, social media, etc
