I never saw it coming either....

I didnt like the movie very much, But I was shocked by the twist...

Although "The Village" does it much better

I'm surprised the Script even got greenlit into a movie once the twist was revealed, Its literally An Exact copy of "The Village's" twist, ONly the village had 2 major twists, In the Monster werent real and The Village was in fact taking place in present time...

The Village had Its "Elders" Build The Village for "Good" reasons thinking by getting away from the evils of the rest of the world, They could live better lives

Antebellum was Just the exact opposite, with The Plantation Having been build for "evil" reasons

I'm very surprised The Producers didnt just stop reading the script after the twist and say "we cant do this, we are literally copying The Village's Twist, you've got to come up with a different ending or twist"

The Trailers for Antebellum did a very good job though of Selling this was some kind of "Past Lives" story or Time Bending story, Thats the reason why I was interested in it and The reason why I didnt remotely see the Twist coming.

overall IMO not a very good movie, I felt this could have easily been a 1 and 15 Minute Movie, There was SO MUCH in This movie that was boring and really wasnt needed

It also completely ignored history. Antebellum period was the period pre-civil war and ended in 1861 with the start of the civil war... So why in the world would a place that was reenacting the antebellum period have all the civil war reenactors running around? It was almost as if they liked the word antebellum and just had to cram it into the the movie when it really made no fucking sense at all. But overall it was a shit movie, and the twist at the end is one of those that isn't going to make people go over how clever, they will just go fuck that I wasted time on a movie and got short changed with a shit ending.

Funny you should mention the Village because I was disappointed with that movie when it came out. When this twist happened, I did think of that movie, but thought this was much better.
I don't know if it was the way it was reviled (the cell phone shocked and confused me for a few minutes), or what, but I was blown away. I thought the movie was very good overall.

Ya, I remember when The Village came out, There was OUTRAGE over The 1st twist that the monsters were fake, I'm not sure alot of people even cared about the 2nd twist(although I'm not accusing you of that)

I completely admit I'm in the minority when in come to The Village as a movie, I love it, while most consider it one of Night's weakest...

But I did go to youtube and watch about 10 reviews after watching the movie, and every single reviewer seemed to be stunned at how they copied The Village's twist...

again I'm with you here, I never saw it coming....It was a Shocking Twist

I was full on thinking we were watching 2 different time periods and They were some how "Past Lives"

I even thought when They "Kidnapped" her, I saw it was The Wife and Mean/Major Bad Buy, I thought to myself, Maybe they have somehow remember their "Past Lives" and are now "Hunting Eden" for something she did in her "Past Life"....I knew the rest of the movie would almost certainly end with Eden escaping and Killing them, so I figured, Maybe The Wife and Main Bad guy, Remembered their "Past Life", remember Eden Escaping and Killing them and They were hunting her down now

so ya I never saw that twist coming, For me though, I just didnt enjoy 90% of the movie.

I didnt like any of the "Antebellum" time period, and Then when They which to present day, I didnt enjoy any of the plot of showing her life, business and friends...

The Twist was shocking and IMO Masterfully disguised, especially in trailers, The way they made it look like she was "Time Jumping" in the trailers was somewhat "dishonest"

but really Hid the Twist, The way they edited the shot with The Plane in the trailer is a Great example....

The shot is not even in the movie...

The shot in the trailers, shows the whole group of cotton farmers looking up at the plane in the sky, Then The plane literally disappears(and they make it look Like a "Time Jump") and Then It reappears and the farmers looked stunned

That shot is not even in the movie....The shot of the group of cotton farmers looking up in the sky, Is from a different point in the movie when they hear thunder....and The shot of the plane is completely FAKE....the scene where The Plane flies over, happened after the Twist is revealed and In the movie its one continuous shot where the plane never disappears...

Theres several scenes like this in the trailer that is edited to make it look like there are "Time Jumps" or like The Main Characters is reliving The Past and the present at the same time, Theres another scene in the trailer, where it shows Eden being "Kidnapped" and Then "Time Jumps" into the cotton field, It literally shows the cotton field empty, then shows Eden literally "Appearing" in the cotton field

^Heres the trailer

Its one of the more dishonest trailers Ive ever watched....Clever and Masterfully disguised, but none the less very dishonest.

Someone spoiled it for me by saying it's like a M. Night movie. So immediately, I thought of THE VILLAGE. But the part where she woke up in modern time knock me off my path for a little bit. Then I thought maybe she is some sort of time traveler, where she can go back to those days and bring slaves to the future. I thought of this because of the cryptic conversations with the other "slave" pregnant girl when she said, "You're my only hope." I thought maybe this is about time travel or parallel world abilities. But then when the general answered his phone from his horse's saddle, then we were back to the Village idea. LOL!

I think it would be more believable if the land was unknown. But it was a reenactment theme park? A location the public knows about. Theme parks are relegated to government inspections, audits, etc. This secret can't be kept in any real world. But it drives the plot twist home.

reply

I agree with that last paragraph totally.

reply

I think the idea is that it wasn't a public theme park but more of a private club. But still seems that in the real world it would be unlikely that it could be kept secret for long. I feel like the time-traveling premise would have been more interesting, but the idea that humans are still capable of enslaving others for their own selfish purposes is more evil.

reply

The Theme Park was separate from the plantation which was private property and had a sign stating it.

reply

+1

Very well executed. This is why I never watch trailers or read reviews before watching a movie.

Imagine the reaction it would have gotten in a full theater.

reply

Yes! I am sad I never got to experience this movie in a theater!

reply

I saw it coming about 40% into the movie. I think why the twist is surprising is because the movie is falsely advertised as a supernatural, possibly time traveling with spooky scenes spread throughout the trailer. But those scenes are taken completely out of context and not presented as they were shown in the trailer. Once I figured out what the twist was (an entirely dumb and illogical one at that) I just kind of said "well this movie started out promising and took a huge nosedive."

reply

It was a cool twist that I did not see coming. This was a much better movie than I thought it would be.

reply

Your post made me excited to sit for this movie, but it dashed my hopes eventually. 4/10
