Not liking Skyler isn’t misogynistic

I remember that Skyler was hated by the fans when this was on and some attributed it to misogyny. I don’t think that’s the reason at all. I am watching the second season and Skyler is constantly on my nerves. She is clearly looking for a new husband because she thinks Walt is dying and acting like an idiot around her boss while pregnant. Singing at the birthday party was one of the cringiest things I have seen on TV. She is just an unpleasant character.

reply

Yeah. We don't hate her for what she is, we hate her for what she does.

reply

What is it she does again that makes you hate her?

reply

Constantly nagging at Walt, having an extramarital affair, losing his money to help Ted.

Need I say more?

reply

And what did Walt do to their family and her life?

reply

Gave them a better future

reply

Have you noticed what she wears going to office as compared to what she wears in family gatherings and parties?! In front of Beneke, she is constantly flouting her breasts!

reply

You mean flaunting.
It's you that's flouting, flouting civility by displaying your misogyny so proudly. Proud boy much?

reply

Ok beta simp.

reply

Playing with yourself is not macho Proud Boy.

reply

Rather be a proud boy then a beta so ok.

reply

I’m just finishing season 2 and the character rubs me the wrong way. She had some legitimate gripes but her anger (at least before Walt’s confession) should have been more tempered considering his cancer diagnosis. It seemed weird the character was white hot angry and petulant but never seems to contemplate that someone with a terminal cancer diagnosis might not behave like the ideal spouse

reply

It's not like she's a real woman, so no it's not misogyny. The writers control how annoying she is or isn't

I will say that it makes sense for her character to be annoying. She married a high school science teacher, she clearly wanted a quiet boring life. So it does make sense that her character would be against the changes she is witnessing

I still find her annoying, but the show kind of needed her to be. This show isn't The Wire or Narcos where it's all about hardened criminals running their empires

reply

Someone put out an example of when Skylar is annoying?
Or annoying in a situation where anyone else of any gender would not be annoyed or annoying.

reply

People dont like Skyler just because she's getting on Walts back about his unreasonable behavior

We as the audience want to see Walts unreasonable behavior
She , as the wife , quite reasonbly doesent .

I totally see her pov.
A lot of people dont and just dislike her for being the normal , grounded non criminal one.
then the mysogeny kicks in later

reply

Is it Walter’s fault that she is flirting with her boss and clearly thinking about marrying him as soon as Walt dies?

reply

thats only a couple of scenes and irrelevant.

What people dont like is the constant asking where he's been all night? , why he has two phones ?, why he's hanging around with scum like Jesse?
and just not letting him get on with his meth dealing like a proper criminal.

but surely you can see why a normal law abiding wife would be like that?

reply

> We as the audience want to see Walts unreasonable behavior

That's interesting. I watch these shows, shows like this ( not that there is a show close to BB ), but it is a tension between wanting people to be happy families, and being there to watch the conflict of the show. I'd say we want to see what happens, but do we really want to see Walt's unreasonably behavior, or do we want to see Walt's unreasonable behavior from his point of view. Because even all though the show Walt was doing this all for his family, and that meant Skyler.

ITA.

Amen! What a bitch!

reply

I think it is.
Mainly for the reason that it is a pattern among the blabbermouth haters
that always tend to be political extremists, yeah, from the right. They hated
Skyler, and Lori the wife on the walking dead, and I don't mean just disliked
the character, just vicious comments and hate parents would smack their kids
for acting like that. These are infantile men who have lousy parents and
dysfunctional families. Look at any other TV show and the mother always
gets slammed by these lowlifes.

reply

Hating the character as written and performed is not misogynistic, because she's a shitty person and deserves it. It's just reality.

However, I have seen some make the case that to write a female character in such a way as she behaves can be seen as misogynistic. All women are wet blankets that just serve to hold their husbands back and cheat on him at first chance, blah blah blah.

reply

There are plenty of women like that in the real world.

reply

At the time, there were a lot of people directing their hatred of the character towards the actress herself on a very personal level. Which of course is just stupid.

I can see her behavior from her point of view, given the circumstances. 40yo pregnant woman married to a milquetoast guy who suddenly starts behaving erratically. She can sense that there's something more going on with him that has nothing to do with the cancer. She can't quite prove it....yet. But, there's proving....& then there's knowing.
