why was this so acclaimed?

Just watched it on DVD for first time expecting a Dark Knight type masterpiece and am completely baffled. Why did critics give it such great reviews? Its clearly an average superhero movie - the acting (Pine ok), the FX, and the origin story you got to admit is abit ridiculous even for a superhero film, .. yet it got hailed a modern masterpiece almost. yet its like an inferior version of Thor meets Captain America 1 (seem to remember that wasn't as acclaimed as this..and was deemed pretty average at the time in 2011 and just did ok box office)

And it made huge box office bigger than all the DCU bar BvS..

It was a good movie, about on par with the weaker Marvel movies like Spiderman. Mostly because it starred a woman and feminists want a female hero and milquetoast male reviewers are too cowed to give it a fair review. Like another guy said, in 10 years it will be forgotten.

1. The leading actress blew it away in comparison to what people thought about her, when she was cast.
2. It's literally the most appealing DCEU film to date (although I've enjoyed the Superman arch this time around.
3. Patty Jenkins is literally the best director to ever get a big budget film.
....4. Lastly, it works, romance, action, good dialogue, fun characters where Jenkins created enough of an influence that made them likeable.

reply

You said it. Jenkins made you care about even the supporting characters. This was one of the best superhero origin movies. The only others in the same class are the 1978 Superman and the first Iron Man.

reply

Also, TDK trilogy is good crime thriller like movies, not very comic like. In a words, its not really a comic book trilogy. Snyder and Jenkins are the only 2 in the DC chairs that at least respect and accept that.

The culture of the time had a big part. You only had to look at the frothing-at-the-mouth, gormless dimwits who praised the film and shouted down any kind of negative review to understand that the crass audience for this kind of lacklustre, uninspired, artless popcorn fodder far outnumber viewers who look for good scripts and cinematic meaning nowadays. The fans of this are so witless they even mistook positive reviews that dared identify problematic aspects of the film as mansplained criticism of women, lol. It's simpleton cinema made at the right moment, nothing more.

I think it’s all about Gal Gadot, she was really good in this, very likable on screen and great charisma.

The story is very good too, maybe not excellent Oscar worthy but pretty descent and had great leading star.

I hate "you go girl" type shit but watched this flick anyway, WHY??? Because I am open minded. It's definitely a good movie but at times the overuse of GCI got on my nerves. This happens in all of the souped up hero movies.

8.6/10

Well, let's see:

1.) It was a good story. Not a masterpiece, you understand, but it's very well-written and something people would happily re-watch over and over again.

2.) This was the first time a female director had done a good action flick, which was unheard of before 2017. Most female directors tend to shy away from the genre, but it didn't phase this director.

3.) Gal Gadot was perfect for the role.

4.) The romance was good, if tragic.

5.) The story has optimism in it, which isn't as common anymore in a lot of superhero films these days.

So I see you've never heard of Kathryn Bigelow?

She makes fantastic action flicks, with the original Point Break being one of the best action films ever made. Near Dark is also one of the best vampire action/romance flicks ever made (save for the nonsensical ending).

reply

Nope,never heard of "Near Dark."

reply

Wow really?

That's heralded as one of the best vampire/horror flicks out there. Bill Paxton really steals the show in that one.

It's well worth the watch if you can check it out.

reply

It was a really good movie.
