How old were you when you first saw BBM?

I saw it when it first came out on DVD when I was 18. I was too young then to fully appreciate it like I do now but I have always liked the movie.

I still haven't seen it - not gonna. 2 dudes bang each other, I get it - cute. I get enough of this crap in the new Star trek series.

Yeah I didn't want to watch either until I zapped on it one day while it was playing on tv. I didn't know what it was so I started to watch it cause it seemed good. When I realized it was Brokeback Mountain but that nothing was graphic I finally decided to watch it entirely.

It's an exceptional movie with amazing actors. Of course the gay side makes it a little annoying but the fact it's more or less a forbidden love counterbalances it. Nothing graphic, especially considering all the obligated gay relations in every show nowadays.

That's another thing - I wouldn't call these 2 amazing actors. Heath Ledger is highly overrated for his role as a joker - I don't see anything remarkable about his depiction of that role. His other films/roles - meh. Believe it or not, the best written/acted joker that I saw was actually in a telltale game.

'Liberace' with Matt Damon and Al Pacino actually does feature great actors, and I haven't see that either.
I think my issue is that these films basically focus on the gayness, coming out, etc. In many other shows, where as you say, there are obligatory gay characters, it's not the main focus of the TV show. The best depiction of a gay character that I saw was in the 'southland' - TV show about cops. That TV show doesn't focus on cop families - I only realized that one of the leads was gay because the dude got up in the morning and there was another dude in the bed. They ticked off a checkbox and never returned to it as many other TV shows do these days (Look, we got a gay character! Let's explore this in great detail. lol).

I think its good that there are more gay characters where its not "all about being gay".

But with a movie like this one I don't really see how you could do it different. The gay is a focus point because they're gay in a time and place where its not acceptable. And it impacts the lives of two families.

You can't always act like gay is some minor detail. Especially in historical context. Things like being in the closet, being persecuted or the HIV epidemic hitting the gay community in the 80s and 90s.

But sure with some random characters in general it doesn't always have to be the main focus if they happen to be gay.
