No actual Arab actors

Hard to believe there was a time when somebody like Omar Sharif could be a movie star in Hollywood.

In this movie, practically all of the Egyptian parts are played by white Americans (Kevin J. O'Connor), white South Africans (Arnold Vosloo), white Israelis (Oded Fehr, Aharon Ipalé), Indians (Eric Avari), Venezuelans (Patricia Velasquez) or Persians (Omid Djalili).

If there are any Arabs in the movie at all, they're all relegated to background parts.

reply

The ancient Egyptians were not Arab. Arabs invaded Egypt after it was already established.

Before coming to this post, I decided to look up the guy who played Beni. I couldn't believe that he was white, and most likely - given his parents names of O'Connor and Connelly - of pure Irish descent. My mind is a little blown!

reply

Interesting, but Beni's supposed to be white. He's Hungarian, actually.

reply

Oh well.

reply

Were Egyptians back then Arabs?

reply

It's called acting, you know people playing pretend for a living.

In short, who gives a shit.

I cannot stand this whole only trans play trans and gay play gay or certain parts of the world can only play there own countries. Good way to limit somones parts. No one cares unless you are part of the 0.000001% that populate twitter.

Even the cute guy with the tatts on his cheekbones wasn't Middle-Eastern? Too bad, he was one of the cooler characters in this movie.

reply

Oded Fehr is Israeli, so technically he's Middle Eastern.

reply

zzzzzzzzzzzz over it.

reply

Agreed. I was just about to post “Who gives a fuck?” Not for nothing, Anwar Sadat’s daughter, Camilla, is a friend of mine, and she looks as white as I am.
