Most unrealistic thing in this movie

That a little kid who never knew his dad would just run up to him and jump into his arms and hug him. Kids that age are afraid to sit on the mall Santa's lap, for crying out loud. But other than that scene, everything else was totally believable.

That is pretty unrealistic. But, I have to go with how few times Owen Wilson "wow"ed.

reply

What? A kid who never knew his dad learns his dad is a hero.

reply

Yep. Kids are weird. Maybe an older teen or adult would reluctantly hug the dad in that situation, but a kid that age - practically zero chance.

reply

respectfully, you're out of your mind. also. film is art. it's not always real. if I learned I had a dad who was an astronaut who saved the world, i'd have hugged the hell out of him. Also, he gave him a toy.

reply

Ever think the mom told him to run up to his daddy? That is quite believable.

reply

I would understand your point if it was a teenage boy but this was a child. A very friendly child from what I gathered of him so I don't see the problem. There was no reason for a child like that to hate his father for things he knew nothing about in the first place. The mom probably told him the truth and said enough to make the kid excited to see his father hence the big hug. Unrealistic? I don't think so.

I think there was more going on with this than what was outright stated, or rather UNstated, by the film. The wife/ex-wife(?) says he can’t just come over like this, and that the courts say he can’t, which implies he’s done this before and has been an issue with whatever the custody and visitation agreements there are. So Chick’s face is probably not completely unfamiliar to the son.

And we also have no idea how long he’s been estranged/separated/divorced, and how long it’s been since Chick has seen them. And considering Chick’s martial issues with his wife probably stems from his gambling addiction, as opposed to, say, any violent physical abuse, there’s no reason why he’d be completely cut out of his sons life.

reply

You think that was the most unrealistic thing?!

reply

A correction: SOME kids are afraid to sit on a Santa's lap. SOME kids love to do that.

SOME kids would be afraid of a stranger if he was told he was their dad.

SOME kids would do it in a second, overjoyed their dad has come for them.

reply

Yea that was a plot hole for sure

reply

Millsey72, your record on spotting plot holes is perfect. Zero. Not a plot hole.
