Jodie Fosters acting was terrible in this

Constantly looking shocked, startled, bewildered... basically the same facial expression each time.

It started to be like a piano just playing the same note.

reply

I really liked her in this film.

reply

She's likeable but annoying as all hell with her poor acting at times.

reply

Jodie's acting wasn't great in this flick, for sure. The supporting cast was a little bland as well, except for James Woods. I think this is another case where the director(Zemeckis) chose SFX over acting.

reply

Tom Skerritt was decent.

reply

She just adapted to Matthew McConaughey's "acting". He was so miscast in this and ruined what could have been one of the finest SF movies.

reply

I liked his casting. Young, good looking Christian. It makes it interesting.

I like the line "a man of the cloth without the cloth" and "but a voice from the sky is exactly what you got."

reply

Nah, he has all the time this awful sunnyboy look. Just imagine Jeff Goldblum or Mel Gibson in that role...

reply

Her acting fit the part. She was playing an oddball character. A geeky astrophysicist who works for SETI.

Tom Skerritt and John Hurt were good in this.

reply

Do you understand what I'm saying? Certain facial expressions were overused and weren't that good. That's why her acting wasnt up to the standards I demand of professional actors.

reply

Have you seen Mark Zuckerberg? He has one facial expression. Her character seemed to resemble someone like him: focused, brilliant, odd, and maybe showing signs of Asperger’s.

reply

Thought it was fine. Great cast.

reply

Nope, good acting all around.

reply

Rewatch it and then comment. I know acting.

reply

You know what you like or don't like. It's your personal opinion and you're completely entitled to it. But you can't expect everyone else to agree with it or you.

reply

I didn't like it either. Still, better than in Silence of the lambs. I will never understand how she got an Oscar for that. Hopkins I get, her - no.

reply

Hopkins turned in an instantly iconic performance & there was a lot of hype around the movie. Foster was able ride that wave by simply being the female lead. It didn't matter that her performance was "fine" at best.

reply

I liked it even less after I had read the book. Not to mention the TV series from 2-3 years ago, with the girl trying to imitate Foster. Atrocious

reply

She was good in this, It's her style in all her movies that you might don't like

reply

She's good until she isn't. And consistency matters.

reply

"Constantly looking shocked, startled, bewildered..."

Would you not be if you made contact with aliens?
