The furnace fire obstacle course

two things:
1) As Sigourney Weaver said in Galaxy quest: "Why is thing even here!!?! it serves no purpose!"

2) If Mr Connery can transit the crazy crushing fire machine once , in a outside-to-inside direction , and then get to the door latch to open the big doors and let the SEALs in , why dint he just open that door and stroll out first time round when he was escaping?

I thought the exact same thing when I saw this. I thought of Weaver in Galaxy Quest going through the "chompers" and fire blower in the center of the ship and her RIGHTLY exclaiming: "Why is this even here? This serves no purpose. Whoever wrote this episode should DIE!"

It was the exact same situation. I was like, what the hell is this weird fire blowing, grate spinning thing in this closed up prison? It is just some ridiculous plot device the writers made up to put them in danger and make it suspenseful.

Seeing as how video games based on movies were all the rage back in the 90s, I wouldn't be surprised if they were originally planning to release a game based on The Rock. I could see the fire trap scene being made into a level.

1) I thought the same thing. Even if DID once serve a purpose, it would have been deactivated a looong time ago!

2) You are absolutely right, I hadn’t thought of that!

1) While it clearly serves one purpose: movie booby trap, it could have been re-activated by the marines once they were in control of the Rock. Once they turned on the furnace or whatever circuit breaker controls the security, or whatever.

2) The door is near, but not directly connected to, the fire-gear tunnel-trench. They could be separated by a wall or something, which might mean that the door would be guarded by not the trench. Sean Connery sneaked past the guards, memorized the timing, and got out.
