Mann planning prequel/sequel

https://theplaylist.net/heat-michael-mann-sequel-prequel-20200515/

a sequel could bring back Pacino, Kilmer, Portman, Judd in varying degrees of supporting roles but obviously have younger big name actors for the leads like Colin Farrel, Depp, Hardy, Pitt, Bale etc..(I cant imagine any big name actor in the 40s-50s range who would not jump at the chance to be in a new Heat movie directed by Mann).

a prequel would probably be about young Hanna and/or McCauley (maybe CGI like Irishman? ILM must have all that Pacino/Deniro face mapping stuff saved right? )

No, thanks.

Just leave it alone...

Not a good idea. This is a pretty perfect movie and its plot is self-contained. I doubt this would work, and I deeply love the film, and I hope they don't; creative energy could be far better spent elsewhere.

well Manns been kind of out of the limelight past few years. his last movie in 2015 bombed so hes probably keen to do something that the studio would greenlight no problem/give him decent budget as would have a good chance at being a hit, and would put him back on the movie map (therefore able to get other stuff he wanted to do greenlit unlike now) - that means going back to his classics and doing sequels/prequels (also see Ridley Scott the past few years with Alien and Blade Runner.. next up hes going to be doing Gladiator 2)

sadly, you're right. even renowned directors go for the pre-sold, retread dollars after a while.

He should pitch a post-ironic Miami Vice reboot to the streaming outlets then and leave Heat alone. Probably...I mean...I would have to ultimately hold off judgement until I saw the film - or at least take a look at the trailer and see if I thought he did it right...

There will never be funding for H2 or H3 unless some China man steps up and finances it without a studio.
Michael Mann is on of the greatest filmmaker in US history but the times changes and TV will be his playground going forward.

Is this still happening?

Disney are involved now. It's a Waingro origin story. Can't wait.
