For years I always thought he said wives instead of lives. Which wouldn't have been false at least in the film with prima nocte.

reply

If he really said "They may take our wives", he wouldn't have got to conclude his speech because during the pause after "wives", all the Scotsmen would have broken out cheering.

Tyrion Lannister's speech at Blackwater Bay was better:

"Don't fight for your king, and don't fight for his kingdoms. Don't fight for honor, don't fight for glory. Don't fight for riches, because you won't get any. This is your city Stannis means to sack. That's your gate he's ramming — and if he gets in, it will be your houses he burns, your gold he steals, your women he will rape. Those are brave men knocking at our door. Let's go kill them."

Its a good speech. I also like the speech in Patton. And even though its not exactly a war movie, I like Bill Pullman's speech in Independence Day.

"I like Bill Pullman's speech in Independence Day."
Really? I thought the total consensus was that it was CHEESY beyond BELIEF?

reply

Opinions vary...

For the most part, it was the best scene in that movie.

reply

Nothing will ever beat Bill Pullman in Independence Day

reply

It was awesome.

reply

It was bloody obvious and awful. Couldn't he think of anything original?

reply

He didn’t have much time to come up with something amazing because of impending doom.

So it’s even more impressive that he could come up with this classic speech that inspired us all to fight the alien scum.

Thank you Mr President.

I suppose so.
