Tom Hanks Made The Right Choice In Turning Down Shawshank Redemption

Tom Hanks declined to act in The Shawshank Redemption as Andy to star in Forrest Gump, which was the most beneficial choice for his career.

Oh yeah, that was definitely a smarter career choice.

Yet ironically he starred in Green Mile, from the same story as SR

The only other actor I could see playing Andy besides Tim Robbins is Tom Hanks

Andy Dufresne was a short wimpy guy in the book. Hanks would have better fit the role. But I really can't imagine anyone else but Robbins in the film now.

If Tom Hanks played it to begin with thinking of Tim Robbins playing the role would’ve been a ridiculous thought and we would’ve been saying “No WAY can i picture Robbins as Dufresne”
Lol.

Agree with you both.

When the actor does a fine job (Robbins in this case), we often think of anyone else as ridiculous, but I *can* see someone else playing Andy (including Hanks). Had Hanks done the role, then the thought of Robbins doing it might indeed seem ridiculous.

Robbins was definitely the better choice for this role.
