Should there have been a black "Friend"?

If it were made today there would have been.

Blacks are about 13% of the American population. One sixth is about 17%.

It seems only logical one of them would have been black. So why not?

reply

There was a black friend in Joey

reply

The original question requires only the answer "who cares?".

reply

People care deeply.

reply

There was that hot one Ross dated. He should’ve married her. She was perfect for him.

reply

Aisha Tyler https://moviechat.org/nm0878768/Aisha-Tyler

Ross probably fucked his sister.

reply

Why?
Seriously......who is worried about the races of sitcom characters?
Just make sure you go after every all black sitcom: Good Times, Fresh Prince, Cosby, Martin, What's Happening, Sanford & Son, Family Matters.....etc. and make sure they have white, Latino or whatever main characters.

This mindset is just idiotic.

reply

I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek. But we all know if "Friends" was made today there would at least one black character, and probably an Asian or an Hispanic.

It's quite logical that any group of six friends might be all white.

At the same time, blacks had a legitimate issue about "diversity" since before the 1970's, there were very few blacks on tv.

reply

Aisha Tyler was the most beautiful black woman at that time. She became more than a friend to Ross.

reply

And Joey.

reply

I take your word for it.

reply

She broke up with Joey to be with Ross, with Joey's blessing. Then she left Ross for her ex-boyfriend, played by Greg Kinnear, who was an absolute nut job.

reply

Agreed.

reply

Does every show have to match percentages within the show? There were plenty of shows that were all black such as Half & Half, Girlfriends, and so on.

reply

No because I hate forced diversity which is really just tokenism.

reply

Not to mention, a coffee shop in the heart of NYC with every customer coming in throughout the 10 years, all white no less

reply

There were customers of other races in the coffee shop. The scenes just focused on the main characters.

reply

Even if that was correct, does it bother you? It’s just a comedy show.

reply

Simply a mere observation.. If I hadn't of made the comment, eventually someone else would've

reply

Do you make these “mere observations” for other races too, or just for white people?

reply

Considering after 10 seasons and only 1 black woman on the show in an episode where Ross dated her for a show being on that long, how could one not come up with this observation??

reply

She was in two seasons, and she dated both Joey and Ross each for several episodes. Ross also dated an Asian woman in season 2, and his first ex-wife is a lesbian. Furthermore, Chandler’s dad is trans.

On top of that, half of the main cast is actually Jewish, not white; Phoebe was heavily implied to be bisexual; and we’ve seen men and women of all races show up in the background.

“Friends” was very progressive for its time. Did you pick up any of that in your observation?? Is all that diversity not enough for you???
