How Did Marisa Tomei Win the Oscar for My Cousin Vinny?

She wasn't mentioned in any of the precursor awards: no Golden Globe nomination, no NY or LA Film Critics, no National Board of Review. SAG Awards didn't exist yet, so the nomination itself came out of left field.

Back then, there were very few of the high profile precursor awards, so such 'surprises' were, if not common, at least a regular possibility. The BAFTAs were irrelevant, there were no SAGs, no critics choice, no masses of tedious regional 'critics' groups desperately trying to handicap the Oscars race. Like Kevin Kline's winning performance a few years earlier, Tomei's seems the kind of performance which would certainly have been nominated by SAG, at least, and would have probably shown up at a good number of the regionals.

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH!

There was actually a cohesive culture back then, a kind of healthy patriotism and positive, unified spirit.

Now every effort is made to make people hate each other based on race, gender, sexuality etc. A cancer has infected the West and it’s making our civilisation tear itself apart. So sad.

Agreed!!

Basically, this is the Death of the Oscars as we once knew it.. Golden Globes aren't far behind

MCV is one of my favorite comedies. In my opinion, it's aged well and is very rewatchable. But I agree that Tomei's Oscar seems out of place. Craft-wise, a big hearted but sarcastic hairdresser is hardly a stretch for any actor. Do I care? Not really, I find award shows generally distasteful. The thought of watching an entire theater full of snobby entitled rich people pat themselves on the back for 6 hours is something that doesn't interest me in the least.

She stole every scene from Joe Percival, which is saying a lot!

reply

Probably should have gotten Best Actress, BUT the producers knew how snobby the academy could be , especially when it comes to comedy, SO they put her up as Best Supporting Actress

She won because she Out Acted the competition AND was in a movie people saw and remember

And there was not that much of an internet with a myriad of wannabe critics...
