I'm the furthest thing from a "hipster", and Terminator 2 sucks. It's a kid's movie about a boy and his pet robot. The non-actor dipshit kid with his pubescent cracking voice and lesbian haircut was one of the most annoying characters in movie history, and the poor man's Rambo, Sarah Connor, was a completely different character than in the first movie, and almost as annoying as the shithead kid. Them turning the Terminator into a fluffy, non-killing pet robot who takes orders from a jackass kid was asinine. "As far as I'm concerned", anyone who likes Terminator 2 is a Millennial, or might as well be one, i.e., someone who is younger than Edward Furlong and thought he was a "cool older kid" when they first saw the movie, and was part of the target audience for a kid's movie.
On the other hand, The Terminator (1984) is among my all-time favorite movies (and I like the other Arnold Terminator movies better than T2 as well, though none of them are among my favorite movies), and Linda Hamilton actually played a believable character in that one. I like Robocop (1987) too, but I like The Terminator better.

And I agree too! I did love T2 when I was younger, but I've come to the conclusion that in fact is a mediocre movie at best and way too overrated. For me T1 is the only Terminator movie.

There is so much wrong with T2 it makes you wonder if Cameron actually forgot about the original and didn't bother even giving it a re-watch before diving in.

I don't know, because I never bothered to do any research.
I believe that he just wanted to subvert expectations by going in a very different route with the characters. Which up to a point worked. Was it any good though? No, I don't feel that way.
To be honest it's a fun movie as long as you shut down your brain and just look at the pictures.

Tbh, it is a fun movie. Great (groundbreaking) special effects too. But as a sequel to the Terminator it loses so much of what made the original great. A few plot holes too. Although i'm sure those die hard fans will argue otherwise.

I was awed by the effects back then, but I'm also honest with myself and most CGI shots didn't age that well.
I understand nostalgia and good memories, but it's not my cup of tea. I prefer to see reality as it is and not through tinted glasses.
Plus, I like to change my mind about movies. It means that I pay attention!
