Perhaps The Most Overrated Movie Ever?

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent film.

It's just not anywhere near as good as they hype.

reply

Perhaps just a tiny bit.

reply

Nope... i think Avatar deserves that title...

Blade Runner is as good as people say... it's beautifully shot (this matters a lot) and there's just enough in terms of ideas to get people thinking, but not so convoluted as to distract with nerdism... it's also a very sensual film, which is rare in sci-fi...

Unlike most movies today, it's so much more than the sum of its parts...

Here... I would agree. Even though it seems to have lost in popularity throughout the years.

reply

No. Not even close. It may be nothing more than a decent film to you (that's fine), but it's widely considered a timeless, hypnotic masterpiece to many cinephiles (including yours truly) for all the right reasons.

reply

Nope. Overrated implies that it was both critically and commercially successful which it wasn't. The notes and feedback from people who worked on the film tell a story of constant conflict, creative differences, and studio disappointment during the development, photography, and post production phases indicate a very troubled movie in all aspects. When I first saw this movie in theaters I was just a hitting puberty and discovering the earliest stages of adulthood and while I could have sneaked into a movie like Porky's or Summer Lovers I chose to see this movie and was blown away by the visuals and ambivalence of the future it was portraying.

That's what they said about Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" back in 1968. Pauline Kael ravaged it when it first came out, but then six months later called it a masterpiece and it has held up very well lo these almost 50 years. As for "Blade Runner", just like "2001" this film is not only a classic, but a masterclass in filmmaking. That alone makes it not overrated, but very much a classic right up there with Kubrick. Most recently there is Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain" to add to my trifecta.

reply

i just wish Aronofsky had a proper budget and director's cut to fully realise what he attempted to do with The Fountain... Solid movie nonetheless

But you know, he said in the end that the bloated film he had originally envisioned became this work of art he now loves. I do wish that he would put out a better Bluray pack though. Unfortunately all that is dictated by Warner Brothers who apparently don't think much of the film. Not unlike what the same company thought of "Blade Runner" when it bitched and complained at the time they released it that they weren't making their money back, and didn't understand the film. Nice track record there WB.

I love that there's no relativism here -- your comment, by evidence of EVERY response to it, is undeniably false.

Bladerunner is overrated?

Yes and no.

It isn't flawless, but it is a great science fiction film.
