Perhaps The Most Overrated Movie Ever?

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent film.

It's just not anywhere near as good as they hype.

reply

Yes, dreadfully overrated by hipster fanboys. This movie is flawed as hell.

reply

Or you can just state your opinion respectfully...

reply

If you’re not a hipster fanboy then you have no reason to be offended. If you are, well then, that’s your problem.

reply

Okay so basically if I think this movie is a masterpiece, I'm automatically a "hipster fanboy"? And you don't see how flawed this logic is?

reply

Flawless masterpiece yes. Flawed masterpiece, then no.

reply

Yeah, I would go with the latter. But honestly, there is no such a thing as a perfect movie, they all have flaws, even the greatest. For me, personally, the closest thing to perfection I've seen would be Godfather Part. 1.

But, yes, definitely Blade Runner some flaws, more than other movies which are considered classics.

reply

YES..YES...YES IT IS.

reply

This is really subjective. The word "overrated" itself is "overrated" and overused. Don't get me wrong, I don't to bitch here, I myself overuse it lol.

That beng said, I disagree, but respect your opinion.

reply

It works as a stoner film because the mood created by the fantastically rich visuals and music is so thick it envelopes you and sends you into a trance.

BUT, it’s boring as all hell with Dullard, sorry Deckard, quite possibly the most bland and charmless protagonist ever put on film, which is impressive considering he’s played by one of the most charming movie stars in Hollywood. Rachel looks nice but there’s not much going on there either.

The replicants, especially Hauer’s Batty, are thankfully more interesting to watch, but it’s only by working hard to pay attention, being extraordinarily patient, and reminding oneself of the acclaimed cult status of the film that it’s possible to make it over the line and actually finish the film.

reply

I disagree with this.

First of all, even to this day there are professional film critics and film makers who find lots of faults and narrative shortcomings with this movie. It was never lauded as a perfect film, but what it is lauded for is its scale of vision about another world. The realisation of this world stands out amongst a majority of futuristic science fiction movies because it is layered with so many suggestive notions of the past while re-imagining a future world with humanity at the cusp of no longer having any humanity. I saw this movie as a kid and my first impression was the scale of the culture Ridley created in 2019 Los Angeles. He didn't go into long winded narrative expositions or any flash back prologues to explain (even though we get the text at the beginning of the film) why things were the way they were. He just throws us into it and we try to figure our way thru the gutter-talk, rain, and dark alley ways.

reply

Even Ridley agrees it's overrated. That's why he's constantly fucking with it to make it better.

reply

I can see how someone could find this film overrated if they're just judging it based on the story and the characters. The story is pretty simple and straightforward and besides perhaps Roy Batty, the characters aren't that remarkable. What is exceptional about the film is just how far ahead of its time it was with visual storytelling/world building. It's basically the Godfather of the cyberpunk film genre & pretty much influenced everything that came after it.

reply

It's not overrated by any interpretation of the word.
