Both masterpieces but I slightly prefer Alien. The mystery around the creature just totally captures the imagination, and Ridley’s nihilistic atmosphere is so thick and all pervasive the whole movie feels like a darkly beautiful tone poem.

Jaws is a fun romp with some great thrills. I actually find the family-fun tone of the music contrasts unusually with some of the darker subject matter, like Quint screaming as he is eaten alive.

Interestingly, both films have a secret weapon - a villainous character who is so awesomely acted they almost overpower the monster - Quint and Ash.

There is no better film than Jaws.

Alien.

In the horror movie vein, both are excellent, but to me, Alien explores fear itself. Fear comes from the unknown, from the dark, from other people, etc., and Alien is almost like an essay in fear and terror.

Jaws is an incredible movie, as well, I just prefer Alien.

I'll always go with Jaws over Alien but wow, both these movies within 4 years of each other is unbelievable.

Quick Jaws story/trivia. Jaws was finally shown on Network TV(ABC) in November, 1979. 80 million people watched, making it second‐highest‐rated televised movie ever.

And 4 years before Jaws, we got Dracula vs Frankenstein. The 70s were awesome for movies

Alien. Because on the ocean, everybody can hear you scream.
