Alien has a few plot holes, once you start asking too many questions. So Jaws wins on that basis.

Not really. You don't have to favour one film just because it was the one that influenced the other. On that basis you'd choose The Thing from Another World over The Thing, which is a superior remake.

Alien for me. I love both films but Alien is both scarier and more atmospheric. The atmospheric creepiness and mystery created by Alien when they investigate the planet is unmatched by any other horror movie. Then you have the designs of the alien creatures and their physiology by Geiger. It helps to create a lore that Jaws can't compete with and makes it a more interesting movie.

So it's a tie for me.
Can't choose. Those are two of the best movies of the 70s.
