‘Superman’ Director Richard Donner Is Not a Fan of Today’s ‘Bleak and Angry’ Superhero Movies

At 90 years old, Richard Donner is gearing up to direct the fifth movie in the “Lethal Weapon” franchise. “It’s both my privilege and duty to put it to bed. It’s exciting, actually,” the director recently told The Telegraph for a career-spanning profile in which he looks ahead to his next film and reflects on his magnum opus, 1978’s “Superman.” The Warner Bros. release popularized the Hollywood comic book film and set a standard for superheroes on film that inspired the likes of Christopher Nolan, Patty Jenkins, and more.

When asked about today’s onslaught of comic book movies, Donner said it’s staggering to see the film genre he helped introduce to the masses become the dominant form of theatrical entertainment. “When you see it done right, by my standards, it’s so fulfilling,” Donner said. “I’m very happy and proud when I see them. When it’s done wrong, it’s such a disappointment.”

Donner said he’s a fan of comic book films like Jenkins’ 2017 “Wonder Woman,” which he said “had the same feeling of emotion” as his 1978 “Superman.” Donner’s film was defined by its idealism and optimistic heroism, a far fry from the brooding nature and gritty atmosphere that came to define superhero movies in the wake of Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy and DC movies directed by Zack Snyder.

“There are so many people that make superheroes so cynical, it’s depressing,” Donner said. “When they’re dark and bleak and angry with themselves and the world, I don’t find it entertaining. I think there’s enough reality going on for that. We just got over four years of that. I think we crave the opposite.”

When asked about Martin Scorsese’s viral comments about Marvel movies feeling like “theme parks,” Donner quipped, “Well, I’d like to be able to make one of those theme park rides!” The director added more seriously: “The problem is, a lot of times, we see in our industry that when the technical lens becomes readily available, it’s totally misused. But at the same time, every once in a while you really see quite a wonderful story with one of these films.”

As for Snyder, Donner shares somewhat of a connection to the “Justice League” director due to the production of “Superman II.” Donner was fired from directing the “Superman” sequel well into production and replaced by Richard Lester, who reshot a lot of what Donner had planned for the movie. The events recall Snyder exiting “Justice League” and the film being reshaped by Joss Whedon. Donner got the chance to reinstate his “Superman II” footage for a 2006 director’s cut, and now Snyder is getting to do the same with HBO Max’s “Justice League” director’s cut. Donner said he has no idea who Snyder is but thinks “it’s wonderful” he’s getting the chance finish his cut.

I like the Reeve films but Superman has evolved in the comics since the early 80s. Also it doesn't help that Lex Luthor in these movies was not at all like the Lex Luthor that existed in the comics. I understand them making him the way they did in the movies since they didn't have the effects or budget to have him create robots or other big inventions to kill Superman. But because of the 90s cartoon some of us have come to prefer the corrupt billionaire philanthropist Lex Luthor and also come to like other villains like Parasite, Metallo, Darkseid, and Braniac. And we just couldn't get those in the past.

I can understand older people who grew up watching nothing but the 60s and 70s media of Batman and Superman not liking the stuff that comes out now but as much as these older people might want to hate on the modern superhero movies, it's all more to do with how things have changed over the years. I will admit though I like Man of Steel I would've preferred Snyder to do like the 90s cartoon and had his father live rather than doing things similarly to the original Reeve movies.

HIS SUPERMAN FILMS ARE SOME OF MY LEAST FAVORITE COMIC FLICKS...SO HIS OPINION MEANS NOTHING TO ME.🙂

reply

Are you kidding? All of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies (except Quest for Peace) are the only Superman movies I like, even if they have issues.

reply

OF ALL THE SUPERMAN FLICKS...YES,THEY ARE THE BEST....THEYRE STILL 5 OUT OF 10'S AT BEST THOUGH.

reply

What's another movie you'd rate as a 5?

reply

BATMAN FOREVER,FANTASTIC FOUR(ALBA),RESIDENT EVIL 1 THROUGH 34.

reply

Mmm okay, I could see those being on the same level. I'd put Superman over them but I haven't seen it in awhile.

I completely agree with Donner. The Dark Knight movies are good, but they're not my favorite superhero movies because they're so serious. Pun intended I guess.

I recently went back and watched the first 2 Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, and I still loved them. As goofy as they are, they feel like a comic book. They're not trying to be cool or deep. I can tell some things are done with tongue-in-cheek.

The first 2 Superman movies are fun to watch. The newer Superman movies are too complicated for me.

"The first 3 Superman movies are fun to watch"

There, fixed it for you. Everyone should watch the movie with Richard Pryor, whether they like it or not, cos computers rocked back in the 80s, and it is my personal favourite.

reply

Oh see I've never seen the 3rd one. I like Richard Pryor but I think you're the first I've heard say anything good about the movie. I'll check it out though. For Richie.

It's the old Superman movie that had him turn evil in the second act, so I dunno why it's hated so much.

reply

Really? I didn't know SM III was put down like that. I guess so as it has a 5.0 on IMDb.

I really don't like comic book movies and mostly don't bother with them but I will agree with Foebane, The first three Superman films are really nicely done and SM III holds up just as good as SM & SM II.

reply

I hated Superman 3. To me it's the epitomy of how not to make a superhero movie. With the exception of Christopher Reeve everyone involved with that film should be ashamed of themselves. Frankly the first 2 are the best of them. I found 4 more enjoyable than 3 as well.

reply

This is pretty much how I feel.

After 9/11, everything has turned dark. "Battlestar Galactica," "Harry Potter," TV dramas, etc. So, superhero movies are following everything else. I prefer what Donner did, but there are many others who prefer the way things have gone.

reply

Neither am I. Superman, of all people, should be light and optimistic. The Reeve movies nailed it.

reply

Donner is right. His original movie Superman, like the Superman of the comics of that time, was a happy, well-adjusted, optimistic superhero. Most of today's movie superheroes are miserable and often even mentally ill.
