I've always thought the academy was a military academy. There would be no cost to him and it would be a ticket off of Tatooine.

reply

Exactly.

reply

Yeah, since the Academy was producing cannon fodder for the empire, they wouldn't charge the students.

But I don't know that they'd provide transport for students who lived that far away, and as useless and unwilling as Luke was, Lars would rather have some work out of him than by paying for passenger tickets to Coruscant.

reply

I wouldn't be so sure. In the USA, if you join the military, transport to your initial training, such as boot camp, is provided.

If not, Luke could always sell his speeder, just like he did to charter the Millennium Falcon.

reply

Good to know!

But Lars seemed like the kind of desperate bastard who'd have a heart attack if Luke asked him for a new pair of shoes for the trip.

Edit: Luke may not have been able to sell his speeder to get off Tattooine, Owen was probably the legal owner as long as he was alive. But then, I doubt legality was ever much of an issue in Mos Eisley.

Luke:
Uncle, my bed sheet was passed down for 3 generations from Lef Lars, it has holes in it and it gets really cold on a night here in Judland so im shivering all night and cant egt any sleep.

Uncle Owen:
We had a poor harvest this year Luke. We could save the credits to hire more hands next year, then we can buy all the blankets we want.

Luke: But its a whole other year.

Uncle Owen: Its only one more season.

-Luke leaves pissed off

Aunt Beru: Owen, Luke cant stay cold forever. Most of his friends have blankets and he has too much of his father in him.

Uncle Owen: Thats what im afraid of, his father is cold blooded just like him and those space blankets are expensive.

Aunt Beru: It means so much to him.

Uncle Owen: Ill make it up to him next year. I promise.

reply

This is pretty funny.

As we saw in Solo, you can just walk up and sign up for the Imperial Naval Academy at no cost and few questions asked. Doubtful there was a recruiting station on Tatooine, but Luke could easily get passage to either Coruscant, or another nearby system that did have a recruiting station.

Lars had the money to send Luke. He just didn't want Luke to go because A) He wanted him to stay as free labor, and to eventually take over the farm B) Was scared Luke would fall into a similar fate as Anakin (it's not clear if Owen knew what happened to Anakin). C) He was just plain cheap.

reply

"Doubtful there was a recruiting station on Tatooine"

That's why he said “I want to transmit my application to the Academy...”

reply

👍👍👍

reply

It wasn't that he was trying to save money. He was trying to keep Luke out of harm's way by keeping him on the farm.

Maybe Lars was trying to delay the inevitable; Luke taking matters into his own hands and just leaving one day.

reply

Lars might have more money if he weren’t wasting it on R2 units with bad motivators. You’re talking months to get one of those fixed. Who knows when the next JaWa crawler will be in town with the right parts. And you know he never buys the extended warrantees.

It was only 1 more season.

Didn’t they have a student loan program or perhaps the Beggars Canyon grant for young T-16 hot shots?
