would you like to see a remake of this?

Or would that be heresy?

reply

I don’t particularly care for remakes. However, I don’t have anything against new tv adaptations of classic literature (I tend to prefer tv for these as it allows more time to adapt more of the story).

That said, I think Conrad’s story missed the window. The mid 1990s to early 2000s was really the high water mark for the BBC costume drama literary adaptation. That really was a great time for programs set in that historical era: Hornblower, Sharpe’s, Austen, Thackeray, Tolstoy, etc.

It’s been downhill ever since

A remake would be pointless. It's been done well already, and it's even in color.

reply

Heresy.

The only drawback to this film was that they didn't speak in French accents -- or it wasn't in French. Otherwise it would have been absolutely perfect.

I think the low budget that didn't allow for at least one epic battle scene with thousands of extras is another drawback. I would have liked to see a duel fought between the two of them in the midst of a huge battle scene, Waterloo, for example.

reply

Interesting observation. I never once thought about that at all. To me the contained look and intimate feel of their conflict -- plus the outstanding performance by Keitel -- negated any need for a big battle set piece.

Could it have been epic? Absolutely. Was it needed? I wouldn't say so.

That being said, it's ironic because Ridley Scott has now become renown for his big, epic battle sequences. So if the movie ever did get a remake, having Ridley Scott at the helm once more would be an interesting decision.

reply

Yes, it certainly was a very intimate conflict and the film is fine as it is, but a Napoleonic War film seems to cry out for spectacle.

reply

Only if Ridley Scott had some input, or better still as the Director again.

reply

No, I enjoy the original. It wouldn't be heresy, but I don't think a remake would improve on it.

reply

All I would like is for Scott to go back and add some epic battle scenes to the original, ala Lucas's revision of Star Wars. He did not have the budget for big battles when he made this. I think a drama set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars would benefit from at least one enormous battle.

Remaking period films is pointless. You can't modernize them. But I can see it working as a miniseries.
