Out of 0-10 what would you rate it?

One of the select few I give a 10/10.

Same! This movie is a magnificent success on all levels. It had an excellent screenplay, and both the director (William Friedkin, who should have won his second Oscar for this) and actors (Ellen and Linda) were at their creative peak at this time. In addition, the technicians were note-perfect. The sound design for this movie is probably one of the best (if not THE best) that I have ever come across. The editing and cinematography were also slick. It is rare to see so many people at the peak of their careers synergize together in one project like this.

Owlfy...I absolutely loved this film! I also give it a 10/10!

A solid 7.5 or just shy of 8. It started out way too slow which is not something I typically complain about in films. It also bothered me how cavalier the priest was upon entering the room, meeting the demon for the first time. It was extremely apparent how fucked she was, but he didn't bat an eye. Pretty good movie though.

That seems like a decent and honest rating to me. I don't agree with you on the pacing , however. I thought it was well done because I read the book before I saw the film. Also, I attended the opening with my wife in my community when it occurred. We were approached by evangelical Christians urging us not to see it because it was considered blasphemous. It created quite a stir.

reply

10/10. It's more than shocking. It's disturbing.

reply

It was for me back then and always has been, disturbing that is. I learned it was inspired by a true story involving a young boy.

reply

What an awesome story! Certainly they made you want to see the film even more rather than scare you off.

reply

Yes, it did have that effect, but it was just part of the intense hype surrounding that movie, something I'll never forget. I had my mind pretty well made up after reading the book and discovering it had been adapted to film.

reply

I think some of the power of the film was also that people were more religious back then as well, God was more part of day to day life. Having said that, I think the more sacrilegious the film was the more hype and shock it got out of people. Would you agree? No movie will ever have an impact like that one did I don't think. I almost consider it the first actual "horror" movie.

reply

I agree completely. The Jesus Movement was in full swing at that time and this movie appeared to be in such direct contrast to that. But then, it also came across as eye-opening to the reality of evil in the world. The 70s was such a tumultuous decade.

reply

Definitely a 10/10 for me

reply

While this was an excellent film, I'd still have to say a 9 out of 10. It was very good, but not perfect.

reply

So what would you give a 10?

reply

To be honest, there are no perfect films. There are films that are very good to excellent, but not perfect. If you want to day that I'm not being reasonable, I'll take your point, but to me, rating of 10/10 is perfect, and such films don't exist. And FWIW, I never rated any film on IMDb as 10/10, either.

reply

Well that's a bit extreme and unnecessary. There comes a point when you can give a movie 10/10 simply because you love it too much. I give Rocky 1 10/10 and not because it's a perfect movie, but because it's my personnal favorite. If I had to rate it objectively, I would give it a 7.5-8/10.

Btw, The Exorcist: 9/10. I would give it a 9.5 but there are too many other great movies that would deserve it so...

reply

Valid point. It is about what movies you like and is therefore subjective.

reply

I give it a 10. This movie was perfect

reply

STILL scares the hell out of me and im way too old to be scared by this silliness....perfect 10/10
Brilliant horror!!!
