Come on Columbo...

Every episode of McCloud that my family and I watched in the 70's occurred in this manner:

1) Flashlight guy appears
2) We see the rotating list of possible choices for tonight's episode
3) We start shouting "come on Columbo...come on Columbo"
4) The announcer says "tonight starring Dennis Weaver as McCloud"
5) We groan with disappointment

reply

We were somewhat the same, although we did also enjoy McCloud and McMillan. We groaned whenever it was that 4th choice, no matter the character NBC kept trying.

reply

There were others such as Hec Ramsey, Tenafly (didn't last long) and Banacek. I liked them all. I think some of those were on Wednesday night? -John

reply

Never saw Tenafly that I remember. We recently watched most of Hec Ramsey from YouTube! I've always enjoyed Richard Boone. However, the 2nd season episode when they murdered his fiancé and her son was completely unnecessary. They wanted him to be "moved" and have a psycho, and it was against the character of the series.

McCloud was my favorite. I enjoyed Columbo, but occasionally had the stray thought the murderer should just kill him and give everyone some relief. I had nothing against McMillan, but I find no great enthusiasm for revisiting it, either. Part of that may be from the way they handled Susan St. James' exit from the series.

reply

Tenafly was played by James McEachin who interestingly was in a couple of Columbo episodes. (Not as Tenafly, though)

reply

It's funny but remember Tenafly and Banacek as equal with Columbo, McCloud, etc. But there were actually very few episodes of either.

Thumbs up. :-)

I don't remember Hec Ramsey

reply

Why? Both were good.

reply

I always hated McCloud because I wanted Columbo to be on.
Sometimes it was McMillan and Wife.
I don't hate McCloud now because I have seen all the Columbo episodes as well as "Murder By Death".

reply

Does anyone remember Faraday and Co, with Dan Dailey?

I think it only ran a few episodes and maybe a pilot.

The plot was Dailey being released from a POW camp somewhere after 25 years, and becoming a private eye. Obviously he was often confused by the modern world.

Not the best gimmick really...

reply

No but I saw something called Hec Ramsey I had never heard of before.

reply

I enjoyed McCloud and McMillan and Wife, but Columbo was always my favourite. And I remember the flashlight guy. Wonder who he was.
