This and One Flew Over The Cukoos Nest= the same movie?

Just saw this for the first time, and it was hard to ignore that the main characters and themes could be stand ins for one another, with the only difference being the setting.

reply

Yes, you nailed it.

In 1962, Ken Kesey wrote the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to romanticize mental patients as just quirky free spirits who were imprisoned by an ultra-conformist American society. This stupid idea captured the public's imagination, and it wound up inspiring a slew of creatives to start applying the same logic to other institutions. In the case of Cool Hand Luke, they applied that logic to the penal system.

reply

I disagree that it was a “stupid idea”. Cukoos was a great movie, with standout performances from every actor in it. If audiences interpreted it as literal rather than allegorical, that’s their problem.

Cool hand Luke also had great performances and Was worth the watch just for Struthers. I suppose it took more than a little inspiration and was very “of the time”.

Did you read what I said? The movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest started out as a book, which was written in 1962. Ken Kesey, who had written the book, was a huge counterculturalist who hated The Establishment and used his writing to perpetuate this idea that mental institutions were symbols of authoritarian and conformity that was crushing the human spirit and individualism.

The book inspired a slew of movies, including Cool Hand Luke, which only came out a few years later and applied the same logic to prisons.

So, it's not that Cool Hand Luke resembles the movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It's that CHL is a ripoff of the book written by Kesey, which later became the movie starring Jack Nicholson. That is why they appear to be the same movie to you.

If audiences interpreted it as literal rather than allegorical, that’s their problem.

I didn't say the audiences interpreted anything as allegorical. I said that Ken Kesey deliberated used his book as an allegory.

What are you even arguing about? Nothing. You're just being a contrarian. I just don't get people like you. You clearly have no sense of history or cultural context behind the book or both movies, but you want to argue about both without knowing anything. Did you ask your question about these movies in all seriousness, or did you just post to humble brag over having recognized that both movies were more or less the same?

reply

Why are you getting so emotional? I disagreed that it’s a “stupid idea”.

It’s a little odd that you’re getting hysterical over a difference of opinion.

reply

You obviously have a BIG PROBLEM with people who buck the status quo and have creative ideas. Maybe Kirk Cameron should direct your next project?

reply

I'm not sure that your conclusion that he based it on a book of another name is factual, just because you get pouty.

To be fair, penal and mental institutions both have major problems and are mired in ton of controversy/corruption.
Making films that bring that to light is a good thing. Likewise, romanticizing all inmates/mental patients is obviously not to so great - lol

Vietnam, Woodstock, Kent State...

Boomers dislike and questioning of authority brought to life in film.

Great movies like these are their legacy.

reply

yeah, then those same boomers fell for CONvid, and wore panties on their faces for over a year just before taking a poison pharma shot into their veins. yeah...i think it's safe to say, the boomers lost their edge.

reply

I wear Kate Winslet's panties over My face. That cost me a lot of money !

reply

Boomers have every right to be concerned about Covid. They had a significantly higher chance of dying. Especially overweight boomers. My best friend passed from Covid a just 44 years old because he was obese.

reply

fat people died all the time before CONvid. that's why they call it "morbidly obese". there's no such thing as CONvid, it's all BS.

reply

The US alone had a million people die from Covid. Why are you calling it "CONvid"? If Covid didn't happen we'd have a million more american's with us today. Are you really that heartless to your fellow Americans? I read one study said 70% of Covid deaths were Republicans because they were much less likely to get vaxxinated. My buddy that died at 44 was also antivax even though I implored him to get vaccinated due to his weight.

reply

People died all the time before CONvid too man. Especially obese people. Also, check the death census records for 2020. No more people died during that time than any of the other recent years. Republicans are notoriously older than Demonrats. That's the only reason why more of them would have died. They were just closer to the end of their lifespan. You got duped man, big time! I can't believe you're still falling for this crap after all that's been released. Like how the poison clot shots are giving all sorts of people heart issues like myocarditis. If you really think there was a virus at all, that means you're one of the dumbest fucks to have ever existed. I'm really sorry, but it's true. Remember, the Amish did not take any of those death jabs, and they are ALL fine. Not one of them died from the so-called "virus". Get real man, I mean are you really going to take you're what "6th booster" coming up here? Take off that dirty medical mask and turn off the boob tube; You fell for one of the dumbest most obvious scams in history.

reply

HEY!...FUCK YALL FOR DERAILING THIS THREAD WITH THAT CRAP.

reply

Hey, these medical mask wearing, news watching, jab taking SOBs need smacked around before they try this same scam again. So, if hijacking a few threads is what it takes to get the job done so be it. That is unless you'd rather be forced jabbed and have to wear a dirty mask over your air-holes for the rest of your life.

🤢

reply

Get over your shitty politics that are 3 years irrelevant.

reply

Actually, pushing shitty politics is when stupid fucks are still claiming they've got CONvid and masking up. Calling CONvid out as a scam is not politics; It's just reality. Calling out the SCAMdemic needs to be done "over and over" so these maskholes know that we're not going to fall for their crap again. And, if you don't think they will try to pull CONvid 2.0, you're dumber than a box of rocks.

reply

You don't just have terrible politics but are completely out of your mind. I'm not surprised those 2 things often go hand in hand.

reply

Cool Hand Luke was a great film.

The OP's thread is overly simplistic and inaccurate.

A man in a corrupt and unfair system that won't conform. That's what Cool Hand Luke and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest have in common. That's it. Both films are great but they are very different.

Posts also segued into low-quality discussions that went nowhere.

This classic deserves better.
