Does anybody else dislike the CGI?

I like that they remastered the series for HD but everytime they show an external CGI scene it just seems out of place.

Yes, it looks like an early 2000s video game cut scene. It just doesn't feel like the 1960s. And in some parts they went over the top with the CGI action, such as in "The Doomsday Machine."

I think CGI mostly worked just fine. But then again, I'm not a fan of the series and just recently watched it on bluray for the first time.

reply

I agree; the CGI ruins it.

Just watched "The Doomsday Machine" a few days ago.

VAST IMPROVEMENT!

The special effects were so cheap and cheesey in the original that I swear you could see the hand holding the Enterprise during one scene.

With the newer graphics, the episode is now most people's top ten.

I hate the CGI. And to the people saying that the CGI is starting to look dated, it looked dated from day one. There's no such thing as CGI that starts to look dated over time. It either looks real from day one or it doesn't. It's not as if people get better at distinguishing between realistic and cartoonish over time.

Not only does obvious CGI look out of place in a 1960s TV show, but for me, it ruins the nostalgia too. I grew up in the '80s watching Star Trek reruns every weeknight at 7 o'clock on channel 7. When I watch the show now I don't want to see, e.g., 90% of what I saw as a kid, I want to see 100%. Also, the original special effects are part of the show's charm.

I would respect their effort to redo the shots of ships and planets if they had actual put some effort and money into it (though I'd still prefer to watch the original versions), instead of using cheap CGI that looks like a cut scene from a PlayStation 2 game. They could have used 1960s technology to create very realistic looking shots; just watch 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) to see what was possible in the 1960s.

I planned to download the series, ripped from the Blu-rays, but the pirates who did the rips thought the CGI versions were the way to go, and as a "bonus" they also thought the remixed 5.1 audio was the way to go. So I ordered the Blu-ray box set instead, so that I can have the original versions complete with the original audio.

I bet you love the flying hubcaps in Plan 9 from outer space too.

Your post is a non sequitur, a reading deficiency-fueled non sequitur no less, but in any case, if I actually liked that movie I'd only want to see it in its original form, obviously.

reply

The CGI looks bad because it uses dull grey instead of the stark contrast of space.

I have mentioned this on several forums.

reply

I much prefer the remastered. Both versions are on the blu ray set, though.

Agree, some of the augmentations to already existing effects like the phasers are okay, but the external space shots are all so jarring and at this point it's dated 2000's CGI too.
