I saw the thread title and thought it would be a clickbait article from a satirist website like The Onion. Wow, he went OFF on his bosses.

Tomorrow headline: Warner Bros Rips TENET as " Worst Movie Ever," and We're the Studio make Batman & Robin.

It was going to happen. They've been keeping theaters around for nostalgia only. I used to spend an enormous of time in an arcade. They went away. The arcades couldn't offer enough of a better experience over home to justify their staying around. It was sad, but that's life.

a Sony 85 inch 4k tv cost $2000 right now. A fantastic surround sound system costs $1000. $3000 and I can have my own theater. If I got to pee I can press pause. Also, I don't have to witness the annoying flicker of film. I can make my own popcorn and get my own soda at 1/100th the price. You know what is still there? The story. The most important thing about a movie is its story. If we didn't have all this fancy technology we'd be telling our stories around a campfire. Nolan can tell a good story, but he needs to get over this film versus digital thing.

Theaters could have been gone in the 80s. The only thing keeping them around was vhs 4:3 aspect ratio and 480i resolution.

reply

"annoying flicker of film." What is that? I though theaters are all digital projection now.

reply

It depends. 95% of theaters are digital. Christoper Nolan was complaining about that too.

In the 90s I watched Guillermo Del Toro's Mimic at a theater. It was framed improperly and it took me out of the movie. The movie is filmed in a way that if you didn't mask the frame right then you would see the microphone the whole time. Theaters are not always best.

As far as flicker goes. I can see the flicker when it's there. It also causes the tetris effect after I walk out of a theater. After I walk out of the theater everything will flicker for like 5 minutes.

Nolan is completely ignoring that there is a global pandemic for personal ego reasons.

reply

Wait, I don't see Nolan complaining digital projection in the article.

This one goes over his work to conserve celluloid over digital. This is of course when 4k was still expensive and not as ubiquitous.

reply

I read the whole article, but don't see Nolan complaining digital projection.

I could care less what Chris Nolan says about anything, but it sounds like quite a lot of people are pissed with this decision. AT&T/Time-Warner is the same company who pulled the plug on our beloved Filmstruck in 2018 because they regarded it as a niche product whereas they wanted to create a Netflix-sized streaming service that eventually became the horribly-titled HBOMAX. They have embarrassingly few subscribers because they failed to make deals with Roku and Amazon Firestick (the Amazon deal went through a couple of weeks ago) and their combined 90 million subscribers. They deserve the opprobrium

It's a great service in terms of content though. I mean, now that I can watch HBO Max properly thanks to Chromecast with Google TV (it didn't work well at all through regular Chromecast and their own app for Android phones).

I just think they should have struck deals with Roku and Amazon before rolling it out. The Roku situation has been especially ridiculous.

Despite my anger with them for snuffing out Filmstruck, I have considered getting HBOMAX because I know it will have a treasure trove of Warner Bros. movies to draw from as well as the esteemed back catalog of HBO material over the years. I still check every couple of weeks to find out if the Roku deal has been struck. I would much rather have HBOMAX than Disney+ that I scarcely watch. I don't really care if they show Wonder Woman on HBOMAX on the same day it's released theatrically. I don't watch movies like that anyway.

Aside from all of HBO content and HBO Max originals, their app has these hubs - TCM, DC, Studio Ghibli, etc. - it's really quite amazing. HBO Max also has a lot of movies that are not on HBO.

On a serious note, you want a $10 off code for Google Store? They sent it to me after my last purchase, but I wont need anything else from them this year, and it expires 12/31.

reply

I appreciate it but I don't need anything from Google Play Store right now. Merry Christmas!

You too. 😊

wow he sure sound pissed!

reply

I don't necessarily blame WB for their decision because they were in a sticky situation. However it could had been handled more diplomatically. I understand Christopher Nolan's passion for the theater-going experience, but the world cannot maintain that right now.

Fair comment.

Both he and Denis Villeneuve are bitching about it now, but they're probably the same ones who were preaching "stay in the house, don't go to work, wear a mask, shut down everything" months ago. Now look.
