What do you think went wrong in OJ Simpson's life that made him turn bad?

OJ Simpson was (and potentially still is) a violent man who played a violent sport and became a hero while doing that. He was able to use his success in that sport to create a minor film and television career, as well as to become a pitchman for several different corporations, most notably a rental car giant.

In the early 1990s, Simpson’s life seems to have begun to fall apart. He had divorced his first wife Marguerite to marry a younger woman, Nicole Brown. Although the marriage initially seemed to be going well, jealously, mutual drug use, and Simpson’s insecurity spelled an end to it by late 1992. Brown moved out their shared home and apparently did not want a reconciliation after at least one instance of domestic violence.

Simpson’s professional career was also floundering. He was fired by NBC Sports from his job as an on-air football commentator. His acting roles were drying up and he was angered that a minor role in a series of comedy films was all that was being offered to him. And his advertising relationship with the rental car giant was cooling down after almost two decades. Since this was prior to the pitchman roles for shady companies that Shaquille O’Neal, Joe Namath and George Foreman now excel at. Simpson’s cash streams were drying up at a time when his expenses were increasing.

There’s also the fact that Simpson and his coterie of friends were known for their ability to “party”. Their levels of drug use were apparently high, and Simpson was known to partake quite heavily. One of the allegations that was made (which seems to have some truth to it as it engendered multiple objections during his trial) is that Simpson and his “couch surfer” Kaeto Kaelin, had gone to a nearby Burger King restaurant to buy food and an illegal substance the night of the Brown/Goldman murders. Simpson was apparently not tested for drugs after the murder; if he was, then the results have never been released to the public.

Women drive men crazy. Happens all the time. I gotta woman driving me crazy right now. You hear stories about OJ and you start thinking... I get it.

reply

I've had some women drive me crazy. Nasty, sadistic bitches. I stopped having them in my life. Didn't slit their throats or anything.

reply

But. Did you?

reply

Easy, money and fame. That will corrupt anybody, particularly if they have some power over others.

reply

What drives most people who want to be famous? Sex and drugs. OJ must have been a walking drugstore. A coke rage is a thing.

he was born black

It was probably a number of factors dating to his childhood & upbringing. There are story's about his father being a repressed homosexual who was abusive toward his mother, him & his siblings. He allegedly died of AIDS. Couple that with drug use, some football injuries, and an underlying narcissistic personality disorder, it all adds up to disaster. Plus too many people around him who didn't want to tell him to get help.

I still don't think he pre-planned the murders. Most likely he went there to do something like slash the tires on Nicole's car for her "dissing' him earlier that evening, then she &/or Goldman caught him in the act, that was the point where he lost it. May not have realized what he'd done until well after it happened.

I also wonder if the drowning death of his two year old daughter Aaren in 1979 may have also help start O.J.'s "descent" into darkness if you will.

I believe that O.J. blamed his first wife Marguerite on Aaren's death and they divorced shortly after that.

That could be certainly seen as a catalyst, but I still think it goes further back than just that. I still think it goes back to his childhood & upbringing.

Two words: He was framed by The Man who was feeling threatened by the gentle Mr. Simpson’s fame and riches, and so sacrificed two crackers in order to take him down.

Sorry, I meant three words.

He was raised in a housing project.
His dad, who abandoned the family early in OJ's life, was a drag queen and homosexual who died of AIDS.

How could you be normal with such a fecked up childhood?

reply

The same thing as WWE superstar, Chris Benoit, maybe? Diminished capacity for empathy from damage done to the prefrontal cortex during athletic exchanges turned them both into psychopaths, probably. Fortunately, crimes are crimes, and in a perfect world justice would and must be served. No excuses. Victims deserve action, and the public requires safety. Partisan and ignorant jurors of Los Angeles County didn't live up to the standards required of them. Simpson was left free to burglar, kidnap and terrorize folks in Las Vegas before some justice took affect.
