“From Darren Aronofsky comes ‘The Whale,’ the story of a reclusive English teacher suffering from severe obesity who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter for one last chance at redemption.

On the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, a six hundred pound recluse hides away in his apartment eating himself to death."

Damn, dude. He's even bigger now. The character sounds too much like what his actual life has been like since retreating from the spotlight.

reply

That's kinda the point. It's not the first time he's cast actors in roles they can relate to due to real life circumstances (like Rourke in The Wrestler or Ryder in Black Swan).

reply

Damn, that's a pretty fucked up and dark story. Aronofsky has been making super-edgy films his entire career, and for me they've been hit or miss, but I must say, I am interested in seeing a 600 pound protagonist on film (not counting comedies)

Although Aronofsky is sort of drawing from the same well as The Wrestler with the whole estranged daughter angle. I hope it's more than just another solid intimate drama and Aronofsky actually pushes real boundaries this time

I’m curious why the OP feels the need to plug A24 in the topic’s headline. Does anyone give a shit about the production company—other than A24 itself? I’ve seen several topics pushing A24 in the past year, and it smells fishy to me.

I’m posting this more as a PSA to other readers than as a request for a response from the OP.

As anyone with eyes can see, it's IndieWire's headline -- which is like any other headline from the trades. And a PSA is fashioned from things known rather than silly hunches, so I think people will get more from the info I passed along than reading your post. Stop pretending this is about something other than your own personal disinterest.

reply

First, the word is “uninterest,”
which means “not interested.” “Disinterest” means “impartial.”

Second I, like many other smart people, do not click on links; therefore, I do not read the words in the link.

Third, I am very aware of how much propaganda, created by bots and shills, befouls the internet, and I will call it out every time I may encounter it.

Fourth, I find a poster who passes along someone else’s work really lazy.

You defined nouns as though they are adjectives. Anyway, my usage of the noun is completely legitimate. Below is a link that goes into the history and usage of both -- or you can just check a dictionary, since you won't click, b/c you have a razor that relieves you of the effort of trying to discern the obvious.

Also, numbered lists are often used in an attempt to address and/or refute in a more authoritative and convincing manner, but in some cases the reality is that the form is just bluster to cover for lack of that very thing.

Ex. "First," attempts to pick apart the word, but deflects from, rather than addresses, the idea that your own lack of interest was the driver here. As the inclusion of such info in the trades will attest, many are interested in which prodco is doing what -- even if R_Kane is not.

Ex. "Third," was just restating what you said in the first reply. I know what you thought, but we both know you were wrong. My post is clearly not an example of what you like to call out, and you knew that before you replied again.

Ex. "Fourth," is completely irrelevant to the rationale behind your PSA. This does nothing but add another weightless number to your list.

Other than you being afraid of links to the point of closing your eyes, there's not much new here.

A24 usually make quality movies. Personally when I see a movie was produced by A24 it makes me want to watch it more.

I think its unfair to have a male titular character named THE WHALE. Imagine the outrage if it was a female.

reply

She-Whale

reply

Totally agree. And I'm female.

reply

I was never a fan of his. I might see this when it hits streaming.

reply

The second "Whale" movie that he's been in lol.
