Is he a Hollywood pariah now?

I do not condone the slap. Yet, I also equally feel that Chris Rock's jab at Jada Pinkett Smith was insanely inappropriate and low. I feel like it is unfair to put Will Smith in pariah land with over a situation in which both he and Rock were equally wrong. Will Smith is a man who is self made and a man who has proven that he has principles and ethics, he doesn't deserve to be booted from the business.

reply

Smith and Rock were in no way "equally wrong". Rock made a joke that some might think was in poor taste. Smith assaulted someone. There's no comparison.

reply

They were both wrong, but not *equally* wrong. The appropriate response to Rock's unkind joke would have been to yell "KEEP MY WIFE'S NAME OUT OF YOUR FUCKIN MOUTH" on national TV, which would have left Rock a mess, an asshole of a comedian who's made an inappropriate joke and is left floundering for a comeback and drowning in flop sweat on national TV, and which probably would have ruined Rock's career.

But since that asshole Smith had to commit an illegal assault on national TV, and who ruined his own career instead of Rock's, well. Smith deserves whatever he gets.

reply

Jada shaved her head and owned it. She had a similar look to the cool and badass look Demi Moore had in GI Jane. By making the joke, Chris Rock destigmatized Jada’s look and made it ok—cool and hip even. He did nothing wrong. He’s an edgy comedian and there are no sacred lambs with him. No untouchables. There are very few comedians left like him.

The BEST thing Jada SHOULD have done….which would have made her look like a cool ass rock star….is bust out laughing at the joke, and maybe even wag a finger at Chris while she’s laughing. Roll with it. Spin it into a positive moment of empowering confidence. Heck, even Will Smith’s initial reaction was to laugh.

Instead, she glared at Smith…so Smith walses up there, assaults Chris…and then has the audacity to nonchalantly stroll back to his seat, like a punk. They should have thrown his dick ass out right then and there. Then….he starts yelling the f-word like a lowlife. Gone is the charade that he’s a cool and nice guy. He has revealed himself.

What Chris did isn’t in the same STRATOSPHERE as the series of punk asshole moves by Smith.

reply

Well, I would have liked the Smiths better if they'd laughed and she'd smiled at the camera and preened, because yeah, she does rock the shaved head!

But they were also totally within their rights to be offended. They just didn't deal with their feelings of offense appropriately, and Will didn't deal with it legally.

reply

Does Will Smith have "principles and ethics"?

Who cares?

"Is he a Hollywood pariah now?"

Yes, he is a pariah.

reply

I hate to play the "whataboutism" card but how exactly is Will a Hollywood pariah when compared to say Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin (who actually killed somebody), or Mel Gibson and their own past misdeeds?

reply

Not sure you have a point here. All three of those men you mentioned were trashed in the tabloids constantly. Spacey is all but dead to Hollywood. Baldwin’s story is still playing out, but it’s not looking good. And Gibson’s career will NEVER be the same. He was the definition of a pariah for 15 years….and he’s STILL paying a price.

Soooo, not sure your point. If you’re trying to say something provocative, maybe ask how professional athletes can be caught on film beating women up….yet still hold onto their multi-million dollar careers.

reply

My point is how can you say that Will Smith is now a pariah after "the slap" when the other names that I listed did or have been accused of doing things that were decidedly worst?

reply

Who did Mel Gibson physically assault?

reply

His former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva accused him of physical abuse:

reply

ACCUSED him. Evidence?

reply

Yeah … I’m going to need more than an accusation. Evidence? Pictures? Arrest for assault?

reply

lol alec baldwin was handed a prop. it's not his fault if the prop was a real gun with real bullets.

reply

Why are you such an Alec Baldwin apologist? At the end of the day, he still pulled the trigger so he is at least partially, responsible. I've never fired an actual gun before, but I if somebody handed me one, I would try to check just to make sure what I'm firing isn't the "real thing" and not simply take another's word for it. And I would express enough common sense to not aim it directly at another human being.

reply

If you're an actor on a professional film set with camera rolling, you're not going to "check the prop isn't a real gun", don't be ridiculous.

Obviously realistic gun props are used often, and they don't fire real bullets. That's why we don't hear about people getting shot on Hollywood film sets.

LOL, how would you "check" the gun anyway? They are designed to look real. Made of metal. There's a person on set whose entire job is to make sure guns are safe, and that person is not Alec Baldwin! LOL. If the story requires pulling the trigger towards the camera, that's what any actor will do if asked to do it.

I don't give a shit about Baldwin, but he has ZERO responsibility in this.

reply

Let's go elsewhere then to prove once and for all that Alec Baldwin had any responsibility:

In this case, we don't need brain-dead sources. We need our own brains.

Understanding how a film set works is not rocket science.

If an actor is following the script and directed to shout angrily at another actor, can the other actor file a workplace harassment complaint? LOL, no they cannot. Likewise, Baldwin was obliged to follow the screenplay by shooting a prop gun at the camera. He did that, because he has a job to do. He's a fucking actor holding a gun in a pretend environment.

reply

He was a producer and there were a series of safety issues on the set, including with guns, that the producers ignored. He was responsible in that regard.

The armorer was responsible for the loaded gun, as was the crew member who said he checked it and announced it was a cold gun. Both failed at their jobs. Baldwin wasn't responsible for their mistakes, but he was, as a producer, responsible in part (along with the other producers and the production company) for the lack of safety controls that lead to two people being shot, one killed.

reply

I won't watch anything with Will Smith ever again. That enough for you?

reply

"Yet, I also equally feel that Chris Rock's jab at Jada Pinkett Smith was insanely inappropriate and low."

What a freakin' snowflake ! She's not cancerous... it's alopecia and she chose to expose her head that way. If anything he treated her equally with everybody else !

Seriously... never watch Ricky Gervais' roasts. You'll fall unconscious.

Yes. If Will slapped Chris at a comedy club, it'd be water under the bridge. He did it on live TV at the highest gala event Hollywood has. It was a career destroying blunder.

reply

WILL HAS A PLAY LEFT...KISS ROCK'S BALLS AND MAKE NICE...MAKE A MOVIE TOGETHER...A FEW REFERENCES IN THE PLOT TO THE REAL LIFE SHIT.
