They claim to be either Jewish or Native American, in order to appropriate some sense of hardship/oppression, and ease their own guilt regarding their white privilege. Even when they *do* have some ethnic/minority ancestry, it's usually so minute and insiginificant to their lifestyle/culture/upbringing to be of any relevance. We can *ALL* go back far enough and say our ancestors were Black etc, but so what?!? Does that mitigate white supremacy and trans-Atlantic slavery? Of course not.
In this case Sheen is saying he's Jewish (DESPITE all evidence to the contrary) in order to get himself out of a hole after he was accused of anti-Semitism. It's a classic anti-Semite strategy: "I'm not anti-Semitic. I have Jewish ancestry."
