Has he ever portrayed a character of low or average intelligence?

It seems he always has to be the wisest, or at least above average in intelligence.

Bruce Almighty: God himself.
Batman: Genius inventor.
Shawshank: As wise as a prisoner can be.
Se7en: Extremely competent detective.
Driving Ms Daisy: As wise as a chauffeur can be.
Unforgiven: Overshadowed by Clint, but he was wise as well.
Under Suspicion: Wise.
Lucky Number Slevin: The Boss.
Million Dollar Baby: Wise.
Invictus: Nelson Mandela.
Now You See Me: Wise. The negative traits from the first movie were written off in the sequel.

I haven't watched all of his movies. Is there a movie where he isn't intellectually stimulating?

In Street Smart - brilliant performance in a mediocre movie - he isn’t exactly stupid but is outwitted by an idiotic wooden journalist. Great breakthrough work by Freeman as a truly despicable character.

reply

In Olympus Has Fallen he plays a President so dimwitted he has to be rescued by Gerard Butler.

reply

I think Aaron Eckhart played the President . Morgan Freeman was the president in Deep Impact

reply

He was Vice President in Olympus.

reply

Right but that’s not the President and he didn’t need to be rescued by Gerard Butler, that was Aaron Eckhart

reply

Very good.

reply

In “Hard Rain” he’s pretty much just a standard criminal if I remember correctly.

reply

Brubaker he plays an insane inmate in solitary

reply

You missed Robin Hood where he invents the telescope long before it was invented.

It's just his vibe. It'd be hard to buy him as low-intelligence - especially now that audiences know him as wise.
