Christopher Nolan has surpassed him.

Nolan's films are higher up in the top 250 list.

The Dark Knight - #4
Inception - #14
Interstellar - #32
Memento - #47
The Dark Knight Rises - #62

Kubrick:

The Shining - #58
A Clockwork Orange - #80
Full Metal Jacket - #87
2001: A Space Odyssey - #90

Nolan also has way more votes. And his movies are much better.

He actually very much is. He may not be as "legendary" If you will, but there is no denying his skill behind the camera and meticulous attention to detail. He may very well be the best director of the next generation only rivaled by Alejandro G. Inarittu and Denis Villenuve. I may have forgotten a few names pardon me if I did feel free to mention them but you cannot deny Nolans brilliance as a filmmaker. And no I am not a "Nolanite" that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard I just love great movies and all I have seen from him are great movies so I am a fan.

Nolan is a gifted director, no question about it. But the more I see of his work, the more I realize that he lacks the gift of understatement, something that Kubrick possesses in abundance. And in his stated attempt to match Kubrick with Interstellar, he stumbles badly by attempting to imbue it with the humanity that he felt was missing from 2001; the human aspect of Interstellar is sadly mawkish, not moving at all (at least to me), and diminishes rather than enhances that film.

As for popularity contests, the likes of Justin Bieber has outsold both Mozart & Miles Davis. Does that make him "better" in any recognizable way? I don't think so!

Seems like a lot of the superhero movies that come along end up in the top 250 because of all the youngsters giving them 10s.

reply

And some of them are downvoting movies in the way of stuff like The Dark Knight, which they perceive as the be-all and end-all of cinema.

reply

IMDb ratings may have meant something in the past, but not anymore.

Its just natural, that new films gets more votes than old ones.

I think only Memento is worth top250 from Nolan.

reply

"His films are much better."

Yeah...okay...whatever you say.

Queen then like usual Disappears!

Good times!

Nolan compared to Kubrick? Good Christ.

reply

You can't compare film makers if one is alive and still making movies and one who has been dead for over 20 years and is not privy to as many younger fimgoers.

I wouldn't use video streaming as an excuse either because services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus aren't even offering Kubrick movies as part of their subscriptions and you have to pay more to see 2001 or Barry Lyndon.

reply

And Kubrick's films are usually best seen in a theater as well. Certainly 2001 must be, for full effect!

reply

I've only seen 2001 on a home screen, but it was still more powerful and gripping than most films I've seen on the big screen.

reply

The Dark Knight Rises is better than 2001: A Space Odyssey? Yeah, I don't think the top 250 on IMDb can be taken super-seriously.
