Do you listen to film soundtracks (original scores)?

I'm not exactly sure why, but I've been listening to a lot of them lately. There's something about them that feel calming and epic at the same time. They're actually pretty great for background music too. "A Clockwork Orange", "Batman Returns", "The Untouchables" and "Irreversible" are all great ones.

The Untouchables soundtrack is an all-time classic. "Victorious" is the track that fills my heart every time.

A more recent soundtrack that I really enjoy as background music is Moneyball. Mychael Danna's score is fantastic. Reminds me of the band Explosions in the Sky.

The Social Network soundtrack makes for good concentration music.

"The Untouchables" theme is one of my favourite theme songs of all time. It just pumps you up right off the bat.

reply

Occasionally when I'm in the mood, not that often though

reply

If you ever want to try something out, I recommend the "Irreversible" soundtrack. I recommend it to you more than anyone else on this site because the guy who composed the music is one of the dudes from Daft Punk.

reply

Awesome, thanks for the recommendation

reply

Absolutely.

I have a ton on cd, as well as a couple of playlists of them.

reply

What's your favourite?

reply

Don't really have one. There are too many, and too many different styles of score.

I do really like The Fellowship of the Rings. I've seen it performed by 2 different symphonies.

reply

That music is a masterpiece.

reply

In the three movies the soundtrack is awesome.

reply

28 Days Soundtrack is one of my favorites, listen to it all the time when working out

reply

Since I was very young. My parents bought Mary Poppins, West Side Story (still have), and Sound of Music which I listened to endlessly. Presently, John Williams is my favorite.

I also have a few albums with TV theme songs and commercial jingles.

reply

John Williams is the composer I have the most soundtracks to.

reply

I have Superman, original Star Wars trilogy, Earthquake, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Phantom Menace.

Which ones do you have?

reply

Do you ever listen to any of his non score compositions as well?

reply

I only know about Lost in Space and the Olympics theme. What would be a good non score composition?

reply

Jurassic Park, Star Wars and E.T.

reply

All of his early music was great.

reply

Same here. All Star wars movie, one of Indy, E.T. a couple of the Harry Potter movies, the Patriot.

reply

He's done too many legendary soundtracks. My mom isn't the type of person to watch movies, but even she knows the Star Wars theme as "that space movie".

reply

"That space movie " well that is a good start...😉

reply

I grew up listening to soundtracks of movie musicals because my mom was a big fan of them. I guess that's why I ended up liking musicals.

Some of my mom's favorites:
⭐ The Sound of Music (she took my sister and me to see the stage production of Sound of Music at the Shubert Theater in Chicago. Florence Henderson played Maria.)
⭐ How the West Was Won (saw it in Cinerama with my mom and granddad.)
⭐ The Music Man
⭐ Mary Poppins
⭐ West Side Story
⭐ Funny Girl
⭐ White Christmas
⭐ Oklahoma

I find that movies and their soundtracks often introduce me to a singer, musician, or composer that I may not be familiar with. Composers such as Hans Zimmer, Alfred Newman, John Williams, Henry Mancini, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Newman, to name a few.

reply

I'm not a fan of musicals at all, but I do love the Overture in West Side Story. Such a great buildup.

reply

Agreed. There are some amazing opening music sequences out there.

reply

I wish they brought Overtures back. We're being robbed of good intros.

reply

Irreversible?? That's probably the most disturbing movie I've ever watched

reply

It's often on lists of "movies you only watch once". But the score is really trippy.

reply

Yes, I do. The last one a couple of days ago: Lord of the rings: The return of the King.
There are so many nice soundtracks like Witness, ET, Indiana Jones and the last crusade, Falling down, The Mummy returns, dancing with wolves, Star Wars...

reply

Fun fact: the Star Wars soundtrack was nominated for an album of the year Grammy.

reply

In the year 1977?
