they landed something on the moon

what can we learn from this?

Context:

The Intuitive Machines Odysseus lunar lander is the first American spacecraft to land on the moon since Apollo 17 did so more than 50 years ago.

Not sure if we're going to learn anything that we don't already know.

reply

Yeah. We had a good shot to take a real good look at the moon. Not to mention, set foot on it.

And we haven't gone back in 51 years.

It would seem whatever we needed to do up there, we did. And what we needed to learn, we learned.

Lastly, there cant be too much of value up there. If there was, we'd have gone back regularly.

reply

We stopped going back simply because after a while it was clear it is just a big grey rock in space of no interest.

It's funny how prior to such missions there is endless speculation about what is on the moon, people get excited following it...and then crashing disappointment when it turns out its just a boring old rock.

Similar with Mars...lots of romantic and idealised speculation about canals etc...and its just a red desert.

Sure, lots of speculation about what may have been there millions of years ago, what could be there buried deep down...but so far nothing.

reply

Well, one hates to say this - but it is how I feel....

If it isn't useful, then why bother? Perhaps the Moon is a useful stepping stone to get to Mars. Forgive my ignorance - I'm not sure of the plans, but I have read a trip to Mars is in the works.

So, maybe the Moon is useful in that sense. But then again....

Why bother going to Mars? What is the point? The only idea I can come up with is to get human beings there to create a new Earth (since we are already grossly overpopulated here). But I'm not even sure human beings can survive on Mars. ANd if not, once again, what's the point of going there? It seems to me those multi billions of dollars are better spent right here on Earth.

reply

Off topic and because I cannot reply there anymore...FYI 🐭
I'm neither a "nut" nor "nuts". ☻

On the topic:
In the not too distant future, the Earth will be uninhabitable.
We're looking for new living space.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/15/stephen-hawking-predictions-human-extinction-to-global-warming.html
And Stephen Hawking wasn't the only one who said/says that.

reply

Hahahahah - all right, good to know (you're not bananas).

One thing for sure - you are funny.

ANyway, yes indeed - is this the real reason to go to Mars (to colonize it)? Even if so.... can humans survive there?

Well I suppose you'd have to visit the planet to know for sure. It still seems like a waste of $ to me.

Yes, I believe in Hawking and The Malthusian principle. The Earth can comfortably sustain 2 billion people. We're now at 8 billion. Eventually the Earth will be uninhabitable.

reply

We can neither live on the Moon nor Mars with our current technology.
But we continue to develop.
Finally Hawking increased his prediction to 1000 years left for us.
We can gain time with measures (birth control, environmental protection).
With or without us the Earth will perish as the sun fades, turning into a red giant that swallows our Mother Earth. 🌍 💔

Exactly correct TimeTunnel.

Funny you say that - I was about to add

"But it's nothing for us to be worried about"

in my last reply.

Anyway, if you please, I am curious to know - do you think space travel is worthwhile???

And lastly, I wonder if you know - The Americans did get to the Moon first - beating the Soviets. But in fact, we can't take full credit. Do you know why???

reply

Ultimately space travel is humanity's only chance of survival.

I no longer care so much who exactly landed where first.
If we can't work together and share our knowledge around the world, we won't make it.
Ok ok, at the moment I wouldn't deliver any knowledge to Russia either.

reply

Ok.

Well, my final question in my last response was complimentary in nature.

"Operation Paperclip"

This is the real reason the AMericans got to the Moon first.

Ok, nice chatting with you this morning TimeTunnel. Best wishes.

reply

Of course!...that was the "real reason". ☺
Something to laugh in context with a serious topic.

Happy Weekend! ☀️

reply

That's right.

American dollars yes, but Deutschland ingenuity is what really did the trick.

Sorry, I watched a few seconds of your video - its hard to think anything involving that guy (the actor) is funny. Insane what happened to him.

Ok, you have a nice weekend as well.

Till next time....

reply

Well, I've a little problem to like Wernher von Braun. 🚀

And although the fatal car accident of young Anton Yelchin (Chekov) was very sad, the scene is hilarious.

reply

Yeah, understandable. I'm not a fan of his either.

But I do admire his brilliance.

Ok, I'm on and off today, I will make a point of watching your video sometime today - thanks.

reply

Sorry TimeTunnel -

That didn't make me laugh at all.

RU sure you sent me the video you meant to send me?

I enjoy your sense of humor - I was thinking I'd see something really funny.

Perhaps we have differing senses of humor.

reply

I watched it again to be sure.

I just don't think Yelchin is funny.

I'm sure others would find the video hysterical.

Ok anyway - thanks for sending it to me. Best wishes.

Apparently, the principle aim is to 'deliver commercial payloads' and 'create a commercial lunar economy.'

Or a new, cost inefficient way to get rid of all our garbage, I suppose.

reply

that's a long way to carry garbage.

reply

Apparently they've taken miniature sculptures of the moon... to the moon. Seriously.

*Shrug*

When is it bin night?

reply

Were the people who lived there very friendly or were they scared of it?

I think one technique was that Ali G would seem to be in the crew helping set up. A very presentable man would be with them, seemingly the interviewer. Then at the last second Ali G would come forward to do the interview, throwing the guest off guard. But that is still no excuse for some of the more ridiculous questions!

reply

If it was 5 million illegal aliens I'm all for it!

Oh, so political, I'm really NOT JOKING;)

reply

Here before the "if you're on stolen land, you're illegal too" people come in while they simultaneously live on stolen land as well and don't move to a different country.

reply

This is why we own a fuck load of guns and several thousands rounds of ammo.
The National Guard better watch their asses:)

reply

We're armed with foul language here. I'm not sure about tickling though.

reply

Tickling, pinching, foul language, ear pulling... whatever wins the fight I say.

reply

Nothing. We've been there before.

🙄

reply

I love the live video of the descent and then videos after it landed.

reply

it's tipped over.

reply

it's not the landing i'm worried about.
it's the launching back up into space and back to earth..

reply

That some idiot accepted my offer to sell him oceanfront property on the moon!

Now as soon as his check clears (Taken two attempts so far. Third time is the charm. I just know it!) I will be super rich!

reply

do you have any property on mars?

reply

Act now and I'll even through in a plot on Mt. Rushmore for your head to be carved up there!
