Tokyo"s red light district

I have heard about Germany and Amsterdam's red light areas for ages, but not Tokyo's. Has anyone ever been there?

Yes, my wife and I had a look around about 15 years ago when we spent a month in Japan. There’s a district where all the ‘Love Hotels’ are.

I live in Chicago, I don't think we have a specific red light area anymore, most have been gentrified. But back in the late 1800's and early 1900''s, the main vice area was located in areas we now call the South Loop and Chinatown. I recently heard about "love hotels", but mainly only about the few emerging in the US and Mexico No thanks.

As a fellow Chicago area resident, I can confirm what you have said. In fact, this past holiday season, I kept going up to houses that had red light bulbs lit up in front and asking for sex, but I always got chased away and the police called on me. I must be messing up prostitution etiquette somehow...

reply

Did you really do that or are are you joking?

reply

lol just joking. Whenever I see the red bulbs that people put up around Christmas, I think of that.

reply

No. Most shocking thing to me: Graffiti @5:07. I didn't think something like that existed in Japan, even in a red-light district.

The alley ("Memory Alley") with the cheap beer and food sounds good...it says "yakitori reigns supreme" I love yakitori (BBQ chicken on a skewer).

Obviously would avoid the places featured in the first few minutes of the video, places designed to remove you from your $$$.

reply

True, you've to be very careful in these areas.
I don't know for Tokyo.
The Netherlands and Germany also have the best music clubs in the "red light districts".

Btw. red lamps in China indicate banks and restaurants. 🏮
Better not to confuse them with brothels. ☺
